IIDD, June 25th

Hello again, Ladies and Gentlemen!

Oops, forgot to include, in earlier message, this website address:

http://www.legacyliquorstore.com/Homepage

Perhaps it will to help The Procrastinators, (you know who you are!), make a decision! Cheers, Patrizio!

PS: Great name for a rock group, if I don't say so myself:

Patrizio and The Procrastinators! Unfortunately, they would have been bigger than The Beatles and The Stones but they never got around to recording!!!

Welcome Home, Sarge and Flamin'!

Great selezzione on the Speyside! I'm very impressed. (Secretly, I was hoping you'd bring Johnny Walker Blue!!!) Perhaps we should drink it when there are only the two of us!!!

Gather you knocked on our door this morning! Sorry but we had a pretty late night. Had dinner with Legs Levine. Took Aquabus to Plaza of Nations, enjoying all the yachts at the different marinas along the way. Hard to even imagine how much some of the larger craft would cost and then the overhead to maintain them, moor them, etc.

Karen lives on the 23rd floor of #8 Smithe Mews. The view from "The Fishbowl" , almost wraparound windows, is simply unbelievable. Pretty close to 270 degrees, sweeping from east downtown through Burnaby to southern panorama of False Creek and city then west over False Creek, past all the bridges to English Bay. Literally like hovering over Olympic Village. Had never seen city from this particular angle before so it was more than a delight to soak in remarkable vistas. Not cheap rent at $3,400/month!

Lovely cheese, mixed olives, and houmus with rice crackers/bread, for hors d'oeuvres, complemented by a crisp Oregon Pinot Gris. Peter, a friend from university days, was fourth, (We'd met years ago.),and he did lightly seared Ahi tuna then sliced thinly, with pickled ginger and wasabi, for a wonderful starter. Legs had yummy roasted, cubed potatoes/beets, poached halibut steaks with a visually stunning and tangy fresh salsa and a mixed rocket salad. I brought a Young's Sangiovese, 2006 and a Karly El Alacaran, Mourvedre, 2005. Surprisingly, Sangiovese was much richer than the Mourvedre, but both were very well received. Peter brought a sumptuous Molly Dooker, The Boxer, 2009 Shiraz, from McLaren Vale. We had sockage, and I am pleased to say that I called varietal, year and region, thank you very much!!! Karen is enamoured of Oregon Pinots so she produced one. I was a too far gone, by then to appreciate what was probably a very pricey drop. Dessert was a tasty rhubarb crisp.

After dinner, we played bridge and The Sisterhood shellaced The Brotherhood! They played very well and we couldn't even defend as cards were all theirs. Eased the pain with a snort of Single Cask bourbon, last of a bottle from her time in Atlanta. Moved there from Vancouver and then to New York. Great, great evening as both are lovely, interesting people. Bit of a sad note, however, as Karen told us that her dad has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's so she plans to move back East in the Fall. Her parents live in Toronto but she wants to return to New York as she loves that city but not her hometown. Furthermore, she said that she couldn't live in the same city as her Mom but NY is close enough for her to be able to visit regularly. Difficult situation. Will miss her as she is loads of fun. First met through squash. Now bridge is the game. Guess we'll just have to visit!

Looking forward to seeing you this evening with rest of gang. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

IIDD, June 24th

Hi Big Molly!

Yes, food Chloë and CL prepared was both delicious and delovely!

Your Filipino bbq sounds scrumptious. I think we may have had some at some point, at your place, if I remember correctly. I presume this would this be an appetizer? Reason I ask is that Cora Lee and I will be doing a bbq as well, probably a range of sausages.

With respect to malt, I'm more than happy to suggest something. If you have time, perhaps we could arrange to meet at Legacy, in the Olympic Village, over the next little while and then we could scan the shelves and you could make a decision, based on their array and some of my suggestions. If you are too busy for that, (and I certainly understand), then I'll be happy to choose for one of the categories I have suggested. If I choose for you, I'll probably wait until I hear back from others and then I can fill in any gaps. Not a big deal, either way, but if you can see your way to visit Legacy, I think you'd enjoy seeing store and chatting with some of the very knowledgeable staff. Perhaps we could arrange a ride at the same time, together with a bite to eat or a gelato at Mario's, just down the way! Anyway, let me know what you think and what your schedule might allow over the next few weeks.

Have been pretty pleased with my rides of late. Had a very pleasant ride out to Steveston on Wednesday. I accompanied Barnacle Bill, (Ragin' Bull/Branko Peric), as he had to return his access pass to the marina where he had spent the last three weeks working on his boat while it was in dry dock there. Almost perfect day so ride was very pleasant. We took the UBC/S W Marine Drive route and had 40K on odometer by time we reached marina. After returning access card, we cycled into Steveston itself and enjoyed java at Bean and Beyond. I had a capuccino and white chocolate/cherry biscotti and enjoyed both very much.

Refreshed and energized, we set off for home, taking #6 Road, CSTB and Cambie Street to 8th and Cambie where Ragin's stopped at the liquor store to purchase a six pack of Corona. I dipsy-doodled and met him under the Cambie Street Bridge, near the Seawall, five minutes later. We rode back to the marina where he docks The Inland Passage and I waved goodbye. Now that he is back in our neck of the woods, he'd like to be part of our regular riding group.

I continued on to our place and then headed back towards Science World as I wanted to log 100K. By time I was close to end of False Creek I had 85K on odometer so I continued on around north side of False Creek all the way to the inuksuk at English Bay. Turned around there and made my way home for 101K by time I was back at Harbour Terrace. Found Cora Lee watching The Young and the Restless! I had a shower and as soon as her soap was over she started working on deck furniture. She has, autocratically, decided to paint the teak. I am opposed to this but there is no rational argument possible with The Sisterhood! Even Maggie is on her side and is using the tip of her tail to paint the hard to get at places on the furniture!

On Thursday, Whirlygig, Barnacle Branko and I cycled out to UBC to do a variation of the S W Marine/Musqueam Reserve Loop and then back to 16th and along it to Imperial. I said goodbye to lads just past St George's, (Whirlygig was picking up Tia, his girlfriend's 8year old daughter from school, QE Annexe, and Ragin' wanted to head home with them, tired from ride of day before.), and continued down Crown and back to S W Marine Drive, UBC and home. When I stopped at the liquor store on Alma and 4th I had 61K on odometer. Wanted to buy a bottle of Pastis, (really enjoy it before dinner ever since I started having it in France this last trip), as well as go next door to the Buy-Low to pick up two bottles of Rose's Lime Cordial, (half the price of same product at Safeway!), a dash of which I add to the water in my camel pack. Had 72K on odometer, with a bit of dipsy-doodling around Kits Point, when I pulled into garage at Harbour Terrace.

This morning, Whirlygig and I circumcycled Stanley Park. Left, from our place, at 7:30am and although it was coolish, really enjoyed the ride at that time of day. Few people about, either on the False Creek Seawall or on seawall around park itself. A few joggers, the odd walker and the city and seascapes belonged to us alone. At one point, the cloud formation was remarkable. Almost like some of the Sunday School illustrations I remember as a child, with shafts of light piercing dark, ominous, foreboding sky.

Just as we reached our place, heavens opened and it rained fairly heavily. I had planned to go on out to UBC but since I had become relatively wet, I decided I would just accompany Whirlygig to just past Kits Pool, close to his turn-off for home, and go back home myself. I don't really like to ride once I'm chilly as it isn't all that comfortable, obviously, and ride becomes a chore rather than a delight. At any rate, by time we were close to MacDonald, rain had stopped and I was feeling warmer so waved goodbye to Giorgio and kept on going out to UBC. In spite of the fairly stiff head wind, I enjoyed trek and "pushed' myself up Foreshore Hill and then did a bit of dipsy-doodling to bring odometer up to 43K. Knew that I'd have at least 55K in the bag by time I was home so made for Harbour Terrace.

With wind, now at my back, I whistled along and about half way along Spanish Bank/Locarno stretch, (I can never remember which is which and where each begins), I was treated to a wonderful panorama. The turbulent weather, (one minute sun peaking through, next fairly heavy showers), sent a rain squall, almost smoke-like, across a glinting English Bay and the city and its skyline were completely obscured. As if someone had drawn a large white curtain across the bay. As the rain/smoke dissipated, the city re-emerged. Quite magical!

More dipsy-doodlage at Kits Point to give me 63K by time I was home so was pleased that I had persevered, if only to see Nature's stunning "make the city disappear" act. I'm sure there were probably a number of such mini or micro-squalls, across the city and surrounding areas as road out to UBC was virtually dry, whereas near GI, there was water streaming in the gutters for a short time.

Fondestos and Cheers, Patrice!

PS: In case I haven't already invited you, please consider joining us on Canada Day, if free and interested.

IIDD, June 22nd

Dear Polygamisti et al!

The stagecoach was never never held-up, by Yosemite Sam, or any other dang varmint. The act of acquiring the books was literally like taking candy from a baby, perhaps even easier. Gen. Chiang Kai Shek's tats are not even real, just henna approximations of those worn by Hong Kong's illegal Tong members, to demonstrate their affiliation and intimidate outsiders. All I had to do was stare coldly into Bourbon Boy's corn syrup flushed face and he could hardly hand over the books I wanted quickly enough, whining and sniveling, "Sorree, Kind Sir! Please don't beat me! Sorree!", all the while! Cheers, Il Conductore!

Hi again, MilTONG!

You can dream but reality will forever elude you! Cheers, The Ghost of Yosemite Sam!

Dear Lord, if I had one wish, it would be to get that no-good Il Conductore,
and get 'im good!

Hi Simone!

Glad things are working out well with respect to your house. Trip to Ireland sounds terrific. We enjoyed Dublin immensely last October.

Hello Fridge Magnet Fans!

Fortunately, both bears were female and obviously cannot resist the allure, and sheer magnetism, of an Iro-Ukrainian. You see what the spin-offs can be from having an industrial strength fridge magnet collection! Don't scoff! If Agneta can send reiki vibes out across the globe, why doubt that fridge magnets can project their power onto the owner/possessor of said magnets!!

Cheers, Ursine Magnet Patrizio!

Hi Prickly Pear and Donna Florida!

So chastised, I have expunged, or at least put on the back burner, your UCAL Library email address, and will now only correspond with Gmail, you G Man, even if California cannot afford to pay its state employees with worthless Yankee $$$'s!!!

Here is Grogg's current email address, (For one who is so persnickity about email addresses, I would have thunk that you would have it already!):

gfdawe@shaw.ca

Have confoimed July 11th with Flash!

Have you thought about a book for group reading on junket to Okanagan? Please submit a list, in triplicate, and we will consider your selezziones! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio/aka An Ever So Contrite Conduttore!

PS: Need to chat about hootch. It may well be just as economical to buy wine at Trader Joe's in Bellingham, as opposed to you muling any from California. Unless, that is, there is something you truly wish to bring. Chatagge anon!

Hi Casa Vicente Aerodrome!

Marcus isn't a cat, he's a Flying Squirrel!

Thought you might like to see what happens to you after you go on a cycling tour! Your thirst increases exponentially! Of course, Vincenzo's thirst is already beyond exponential Cheers, Patrizio!

Hello Walla Walla!

Trust this note finds you both well. Busy time here, once back, as were were on the road from June 16th, 2010, until October 23rd, (drove across Canada and then flew to Europe for three months), and then again from December 16th to March 22nd, (2011), drove to LA and after Christmas continued to Mexico, then returned via San Antonio, Texas/LA. Embarrassed to say but still going through much of our accumulated mail, trying to catch up on long overdue correspondence. Consequently, I wanted to send along an email to thank you for your lovely, lovely Christmas card, (I assume made by Tricia in her studio!), and wishes, and simply catch up.

Europe, (London, Stockholm, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brugge, Chabeuill, (south of Lyon at home of friends for a week), with Flamin' and Sarge, then together for two weeks on a canal boat on the Canal de Nivernais, then to Berne and finally an apartment in Paris for a week. F/S back to Vancouver, we to London for a few days and then to Dublin for a week. Back to London to fly to Toronto on October 15th. Drove back to Vancouver, stopping to see Clara/Dusty in Falcon. Had started trip there to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Ayn and Los Horridos flew up from LA, Chloë from Vancouver. Wonderful family affair, as you can imagine.

Mexico was one of best hols we have ever had. Rented a very comfortable house, three bedrooms, in Guayabitos, small town on coast, 63K north of Puerta Vallarta. Clare and Dusty came for January, other friends and relatives over duration of our stay. Lived like royalty given our $CDN. Up north to see friends from university days who now live in Lake Chapala, at beginning of March, then to San Miguel de Allende and then to San Antone to stay with friends, (Randy is a former boarder!), there for almost a week. So, no excuses for late reply, but plenty of reasons!

Will be spending the summer here for first time in two years. Looking forward to it if it ever warms up! Nancy and David, from Berkeley, arrive on July 6th for two weeks. Will spend the weekend, 8th-11th, in Okanagan, wine tasting, along with Flamin' and Sarge. Following weekend is Vancouver Folk Festival and all six of us will attend. Mid-week, N/D will take ferry to Nanaimo to spend a few days with Grogg/Lurchesca who now live in Parksville, about 20K north of there.

In early August, two former Swiss boarders, sisters, Fabienne and Ursula, together with a friend we've never met, will stay for a week. In between, we are trying to paint our patio deck and refinish some of lawn furniture Sharktooth Annie is now in a wheelchair most of the time. I take her for strolls around Granville Island. She is in pretty good shape, aside for almost no meaningful speech, given that she will be 98 in September! Chloë is staying in the Annexe, courtesy of her grandparents, while they are in Falcon, but Cora Lee is determined that she have her own place come November! She has been living with us for almost two years, in guest bedroom when not next door. For my part, I have been urging de-de-nesting for years!

Hi Beth and Ralph!

Paul asked me to contact you regarding the malt tasting. I have attached directions for finding our place but if you stay at the Granville Island Hotel, then you will just walk over. I can provide directions if you decide to do that.

With respect to the malt tasting, in the past, everyone contributes a bottle and takes home what is left
at the end of the evening, sometimes horse trading. With you, alone, we have eleven single malts. I think that is more than enough. However, if Ralph is a serious taster and would like to sit at the tasting table with an array of malts before him, then I suggest his contribution, (bottle costs vary from approximately $65-$120), based on average cost, go towards the expense of renting glasses. If he is not as serious as you, about malt, much like my wife, Cora Lee, then he, (and CL!), can sip from your array. Not a big deal, BUT if he is keen to bring a bottle, then that is fine as well. (Perhaps you will have others staying in your room at GIH!) We will simply adjust formatting of place mats. Let me know your collective thoughts and we will plan accordingly.

Not sure where you purchase your hootch but Legacy, a new private liquor store in Olympic Village, has a wonderful, wonderful selection. Below, find an earlier, now modified, email:

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, wherever you are!

Trust everyone is well. Since Friday, July 22nd is fast approaching, I'd like those of you, not yet committed, (MOST), to do so! As I have already mentioned, I propose ten bottles, two from each of the following regions: Islay, non-Islay islands, Highlands, Speyside and Lowlands. This will give a bit of an overview of different tastes and styles across the country. With respect to hootch, please indicate bottle's pedigree: size, % alcohol, cost, etc. Furthermore, please select food dish you'd like to bring.

An email to group, announcing both malt and fodder, you elect to bring, will help everyone choose/decide.

Paolo will be doing place mats, I'll handle renting glasses. (Based on these costs there will be a small levy, $5 in past, payable before tasting commences, or the surrender of passports!) Will probably need at least 110 and probably closer to 120-130, to accommodate the non-carded, non tasters! So far there are eleven confirmed tasters, (Patrizio, Paolo, Beth, Per, Kjell, Jim, Al, Dave, Jugos Dom Pedro, Whirlygig, Sarge), most, I assume, with significant others who will attend. Will we need riot control?

As well, I'm planning to invite Hal Wake, (VIWF and, as well, A Dram Come True), to show him how the experts do it! (I chatted with him about this at recent VIWF reception.) If he comes, he'll have Observer Status so no necessity to supply a bottle.

Menu:

Mains: Cora Lee/Patrizio, bbq, yet to be determined so please state/suggest allergies, ideological preferences, lunatic fringe recipes, etc.

Hi Folks,

How are things? As always Patrick, you seem to be soooo busy - biking here and there andnot to mention donning your barbeque hat followed by rubber gloves for clean up. Where do you get your energy?Had a good visit with A.M. and she was so pleased that you had called her for her birthday. This time I decided that I would buy her food for a birthday gift. I know that she can afford it but I bought things that I know she would not buy for herself. Waffles, lemon meringue pie, president choice cookies, mimi frozen pizzas, chocolate covered acai berries ect. This should keep her going for awhile. I like to take her out for pizza and for her birthday I bought kentucky fried chicken and all the trimmings. Chineese is also another good one.My parents would always take her out but now no one does. I think I told you that a finally bought a house? It is only 2 blocks from where I am now. A single dwelling backing on to a park which is what I wanted. My possession date is July 20 and my moving in day is the 27th. This way I can move at my leisure, have a painter come etc.My big news is that I am going to Ireland in mid september with a girlfriend. Should be exciting andbecause I am not a beer drinker I had better brush up on my Irish Mist drinking.Have a good day. Simone!

IIDD, June 21st

Hi Gander!

Your Father's Day sounded fab even if it was XXX rated! Adrian can do community service in Vancouver, cleaning up after the riot! When do you go to Vail or was that "Jail" for all that kinky old time stuff with the manacles, whips and high heels. What was Ruth wearing? Guess that is why she has to work such long hours. To keep you in diamond studded, high heeled sneakers!!!

Join us for Canada Day! Oops! Forgot Ruthless is stranded in Spain without money or a passport. Perhaps all that old time stuff will come in handy if nobody helps out! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

We didn't see the blue grotto as the seas sere too rough and it was closed the day. It however was a beautiful day none the less. The island itself is quite magnificent and scenery was breathtaking. We did take the gondola up to Anacapri and had a spectacular view of the island. We are off to white knuckle the Amalfi coast, after seeing the driving here, narrow roads and multiple scooters our demise is may be quite imminent! Molly gets everything!

Hi Kids!

Happy White Knuckling! I last was on the Amalfi Coast in 1970, hitchhiking! Irene and I were given a ride by two weekend fishermen driving a tiny, three-wheeled, open flat-bed, pick-up. By the time they dropped us off near the train station in Napoli we were virtually seasick from the winding roads and breathing in all the exhaust fumes from the underpowered vehicle. They were fine as they were in a closed cab and only had to deal with all the cigarette smoke their non-stop puffing produced!

When are you home on the 25th? Hope to ride out to Steveston with Barnacle Bill tomorrow as he has to return his access card to marina.

Maggie will oppose the will based on Mollie's earlier consumption of cat food and feces! Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Flamin' and Sarge!

No because she still does not know how to operate it! Evening turning it on requires copious amounts of foul language. I'm usually able to read, and often finish, my current Book Club selection, while she is fussing. Her driving hasn't improved either. I need half the cost of the flat screen for extra insurance. Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Sarge and Flamin'!

I guess the only other possibility would be that your were in Amalfi, (eating chicken wings and sipping a Mott's), a sister city to Amafi, and apparently even more beautiful and picturesque! Cheers, Patrizio!

PS: No wonder Garmin Goil is so confused!!!

IIDD, June 20th

Hi Sarge and Flamin'!

Glad you enjoyed Capri. Did you manage to visit the fabled Blue Grotto? Sometimes, if sea is too rough, small rowboats cannot manage opening in the cliff which provides access to cave. I was last there in 1957 and it was magnificent. My parents and I were accompanied by my school teacher and her mother as they were returning to England while we were en route to Canada. Miss Bath's Mother had a wonderful voice and she and the chap rowing the boat sang a number of snatches of arias from various Italian operas. Quite magical with incredible acoustics in cave and aquamarine/turquoise, crystal clear water.

Marvelous, marvelous supper last night. Chloë prepared a truly delicious and visually stunning dinner, with some help from Coriandre on the curry. The Dal/Dhal with ginger, was perhaps my favourite but the radish salad with coconut and hot green chili peppers was remarkable, as was the wonderful tomatoe/onion/shrimp curry. All washed down with a terrific bottle of De Martino 2009 Legado Reserve, Syrah, Choapa Valley, Chile, 14.5%, left for us by Grogg. Some very striking mineral notes with fresh red fruit and chocolate, velvet in the mouth with a slight hint of oak on the finish. Dessert was ultra creamy crème brûlée from Stuart's Bakery in GI Market. We enjoyed them while watching two taped episodes of Downton Abbey:

"The series is set in the fictional Downton Abbey, stately home of the Earl and Countess of Grantham, and follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants early in the reign of King George V. The series spans the two years prior to the Great War, commencing with news of the sinking of the Titanic, an event that sets the story in motion."

Cora Lee started watching it in London last October. I can hardly wait to see next few episodes and would have watched them but it was close to midnight by the time we had seen a number of the recorded sessions!

Session Six of my Eight Session chemical peel and I dream about the whole process being over, I can tell you! Bit like having Chicken Pox when you want to rip your face and other affected areas to bleeding, such is the constant itch and tightness/dryness of the skin undergoing treatment. Like having a hot, hot shower after a bad sunburn! Not much fun but maltage helps, of course!!!

Have to wait for my Father's Day presents, face protector, as Body Shop was out when Chloë went to Oakridge to pick up lotions and unguents. Have an I-O-U for them and a pass to see Midnight in Paris later this week. We were going to go last night but by the time we finished dinner it seemed silly to dash out the door, especially since Chloë is still fighting a bit of a cold. As well, gift package contained about seven mini, mini-bottles of Tobasco Sauce, scored from recent trip to Vegas. They have DIY fridge magnets written all over them!!! My Father's Day card shows a demented, Maggie-like feline face so everyone was in on gift and celebration!

Had a call this morning and when I looked at display it read, "Van Coast", so I thought it might have been something to do with either my dermatologist or the orthopedic specialist about my shoulder. Unfortunately, neither! Danielle! I wouldn't have picked up if I'd been quick enough to realize it was his number. Wasn't particularly talkative or encouraging in any way as he rambled on about everything from how painful he finds riding his bicycle to how there is no fruit in the Okanagan and all the wineries are going bankrupt to how long it took him to finish their place and there is little work to be had and on and on and on. Ended with him saying he was planning to be at GI this evening and would pop around for a beer, uninvited, I might add! Cora Lee will be doing her shift at WISH. Haven't decided if I'll be at home or not!

Think I forgot to mention that poor Dodenheimer fell at the Lodge about two weeks ago and broke her hip! I just found out about it last week and visited her once. Given surgery, etc., she seems to be in pretty good shape but difficult, if not impossible, to get details from her or staff as we are not family, of course. Plan to walk up to VGH with CL and Chloë later this afternoon to see her. I also want The Sisterhood to advise me on a new pair of frames. Lost or misplaced my glasses about two weeks ago and they have not turned up yet. Am using an old pair from '80's, (now back in style!), but prescription is much changed, of course. Need to have something when in TG as my driver's license stipulates glasses. Funnily enough, I really don't notice much difference, either driving or watching TV, between old and new, in terms of clarity of vision. Who knows, perhaps my eyes are getting younger while the rest of me is falling apart!

Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Dear Lincoln Lawyer and Frank Lloyd Wright:

I have followed, with more than passing interest, your lengthy, quotidian, not to say legalistic, exchange regarding the alleged misappropriation of said "leftover" books. I find it highly amusing and painfully ironic that the two of you are fussing, ad nauseum, about the disposition of reading matter when the Lame Brain Lawyer didn't even have the wherewithal to read the book selected for the last Book Club meeting and the Absent Architect, is just that, having missed more gatherings than the NRBC constitution allows, and now faces summary ejection from group.

To these plebeian quibblings you have added additional incendiary material, the like of which marks you, nay brands you as part of the yahoo/yob culture responsible for the recent riots. I leave you to your mind numbing chats about the notion of statehood, government accountability and rule of law, to which you obviously pay lip service. I look forward, for my part, to leaving behind the cerebral dessication of Fukuyama for the visceral blood sport of Jø Nesbo. In closing, I remain, your Nemesis, Il Conductore-4, Two-Face/Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper-0! Cheers, Patrizio!

PS: Sorree, I spit on long pants!

IIDD, June 18th

Hi Whirlygig and Raymundo!

Ray:

Giorgio and I had a very pleasant ride out to UBC to do some of the Marine Drive/Musqueam Loop. Dry for most part until it started to rain reasonably steadily just a few blocks from Whirlygig's place! Of course, he raced home, hardly bothering to say goodbye, such was his haste, leaving me to shiver in the showers and squalls most of the way back to Harbour Terrace! Given his behaviour, I have banished him to the hinterland until next Wednesday so we won't have him to kick around on any rides before you fly away on hols. He is leaving for his fishing trip tomorrow morning so he probably won't see you until you return from Europe. He sends along his best wishes for a great time. For my part, I'm keen to ride tomorrow morning so let me know what you think when you have a moment. Cheers, Patrizio!

Last few entries from Flamin' and Sarge:

We have heard and seen videos of Vancouver very shameful. It is hard to believe this is the same city that hosted the Olympics . I am so proud of Ryan for organizing a clean up with his friends. What's been happening lately did someone actually die?
We are in otrano a beautiful coastal resort and have been frolicking in the sea. We landed here yesterday after a 60 km ride winding along the coast. We were told it was flat with a 2 degree incline... It was a lie!! Mostly up hill but by now have legs of titanium and able to cycle up and hill Italy puts in front of me. We have been eating like pigs despite our attempts to lower food intake, Italians eat very big meals and very late. We start eating around 8 pm but they don't even venture out until 10 pm with all their children in tow. We head back to monopoli tomorrow and pass in our bikes. It has been a wonderful adventure and enjoyed every minute of it. Take care.

Just brought I would forward you ryan's account of his clean up efforts following the riot
He makes me proud

Ryan you are awesome you have made us very proud and I have tears in my eyes reading this. Mom,

After watching the riot from home Wednesday night i put on facebook that I was going to head downtown to clean up. At 6:50 I left home with 100 garbage bags, picked up gloves from Starbucks, and jumped on the bus. Amanda came with me and we found a sidewalk in need of repair and a few people maybe a dozen or so downtown with brooms and shovels.

One of the people gave Amanda an extra broom and we continued in front of Future Shop; picking glass, cigarette butts, litter etc from the street. The group we were with heading to London Drugs and Amanda and I walked over to Howe Street on Robson between Sears and Chapters. All of the glass had been broken and Sears had been partially looted. We continued picking up pieces of glass and trash and were joined by a man named Javier. As people walked by they said thank you, or asked for a garbage bag, or put some trash in the ones we were holding. By about 8:30, Lauren Senft had joined us and Darryl Lampitt (skating official). We were cleaning the sidewalk in front of Chapters; at 9am the City workers arrived in a pick-up truck with Industrial gloves, garbage bags, and those claw pickers. We were now loaded for bare and walked over to the Art Gallery.

The steps were littered with broken bottles, glass, litter and while were were there the Premier walked by. She put her hand on Amanda's shoulder from behind and said thank you. Amanda did not recognize her; she had been thanked so many times this morning.

About 10 am, with our section cleaner than a normal day, we walked back to Granville Street. We heard a rumour that people were writing on the ply wood at the Bay. When Amanda and I arrived early in the morning the plywood had not been erected. We saw a large group and grabbed a Sharpie and left a note on the wall. Messages of disbelief, sorrow, shame, thanks, and appreciation were the norm. I just wrote "There are no words -Ryan".

After admiring the wall for a few seconds the mayor walked by (with the Premier a step in front) from about 10 feet I said "Gergor, thanks". He immediately stopped his pace, gave what he was holding to an advisor and shook my hand and said thanks. We chatted for a brief minute and as we stopped the Premier had begun a discussion with Lauren and Darryl. For a few minutes we found ourselves at the centre of the media scrum.

We left the scrum and as we walked North on Granville we heard that there was a swimwear store, looted, with burnt mannequins. This was one of the few places without boards, and it was easy to see the destruction inside. When we got to the store Lauren opened the door and said the four of us were there to help. We went inside and began sifting through glass, and hangers, and clothing. While we were in the store Marc Allain knocked on the window, we waved and kept going. After 20 mins or so a glass clean-up crew arrived. With the arrival of the cavalry we left.

Having committed 4 hours of labour and with the knowledge that there were now hundreds of people downtown cleaning whatever they could we grabbed some lunch and parted ways...

The city won't be the same again, with so many children it's hard to keep it this clean. Ryan

Picture is on of the beautiful small beach areas that dotted the coast of puglia on route to Otrano the beautiful resort town where we spent 2 days. This part of the trip was the most picturesque staying mostly along the coast with lots of up and down hills. The vistas magnifcio. We got up this morning after staying in a beautiful 4 star hotel and headed back to Lecce . It was a 45 km ride , partially along the coast. We stopped at a private beach for a cool soak in the ocean and diet coke for fuel. Half way through ride we headed in land where the 32 degree heat bounced off the pavement. We caught the train back to Monopoli having competed 400 km of riding with minor scrapes and a busted bike tube. We are now in the hotel and will be heading to Sorrento tomorrow with a drive down the Amalfi coast and a trip to Capri . Needless to say we have been having an excellent time. Love to all. M.

Hi Lynne and Peter!

Pleased to learn that Jugos Dom Pedro has made the transition from freshly squeezed OJ to pisco sours!

Off to circumcycle Stanley Park in about an hour, together with Whirlygig, one of my regular riding group, along with Ilya Brotsky, a young man whose parents live in our building. He is home from Toronto, for a week or so, to be part of Stanley Cup hoopla. He is working for the mega-mining group that bought INCO so I suppose you know it. He spent last eight months or so in Brazil being trained. He has a degree in business from Cornell so I gather he is in the management side of things as opposed to technical aspects of mining. I'll grill him on ride and be better able to let you know what your competition is up to when next we share your more than delightful company in The Naramata, coming up soon, as a matter of fact!

Did 101K yesterday, UBC Loop, as need to have the stamina for Penticton and environs! Cheers, Patrizio!

Latest from Flamin'/Sarge:

We don' thane wifi connection I did get a sim card but of course after 3 trips to Vonda hone which they essentially told me that the first place sold me the wrong card , then installed a second one incorrectly, the third place I went they told me what I wanted to hear so I would go away.

Day 4 and completed 65 km bike ride along the coast from Gallipoli to di Leuca. Stayed mostly along the sea and had wonderful vistas of the blue Mediterranean and the craggy ocean. There were also expanses of sandy beaches. Great biking riding day Bit cloudy and tail winds. Yesterday we went to Gallipoli following a 75 km ride. which was hard going as the sun was beating down and alot of flat riding ground this one more difficult then the 92 km ride day before. They saw it's because it is day two but i say it's because i have crotch rot , i know tmi, gallipoli which has been a favorite of all the cities. There is has a modern section and you cross a bridge to get to the old town. Many wonderful architecture and nice to wind through the old section. We have tried to lower food consumption as it has been a pig feast. The Italians do antipasti, primo usually pasta, and secondi dishes followed by dessert. We met this person from india who has been living here for 6 years and speaks English well. Told us they eat like this everyday and mostly twice a day. Of course the siesta happens at everyday for 2-3 hours as they have to eat big sleep it off then come to work at 5 pm. Had a minor stumble bit of road rash but adds the bike profile I am trying to instigate.
Hope all is well.looking forward to the win tonight

Hi Flamin' and Sarge!

Sorry to hear about your tumble Flamin'! Just be glad it wasn't over one of those seaside cliffs!

Latest from Peter:

Hi Patrick,

I was unable to respond to your Monday morning e-mail as I was en route yesterday to Peru. I'm here this week and next, visiting sites for two clients. There will be solace in pisco sours.

Before leaving home I planted 20 new reisling vines, which I'm going to use for personal winemaking. I also frantically finished shoot thinning as the vines are in a period of explosive growth and I had to try to get some decent spacing of the shoots coming off the cordons. Thanks for the instructional video from Mendoza.

Will work on my malt selection!

Ciao from Lima, Peter!

Did 101K yesterday, UBC Loop, all by my lonesome, (I don't ned no stinkin' peleton!), as need to have the stamina for Penticton and environs! Cheers, Patrizio!

So, Bari Group, I spit on your 95K, let alone your 65K! Fondestos, Bestestos and Cheers, Patrizio! Andiamo! Andiamo!! Andiamo!!!

IIDD, June 14th

Hi Flamin' and Sarge!

Great shot of the peleton! Trip sounds fabuloso. We are green with envy but will drown our sorrows with all the expensive wine Grogg will bring when he stays with us this coming Thursday/Friday and there are just the three of us! Lurchesca isn't coming over until Saturday for the Twits gig in West Van!

Just had a chat with Sylvia and Ray really isn't all that well. He complained about feeling feverish when we rode out to Steveston on Saturday. He is now taking antibiotics as it seems he might have a bladder infection! She says he's not sleeping well, on top of all this. She thinks he has worked himself into a tizzy over house, garden and tutoring. Apparently they went to BCAA yesterday for travel insurance and he neglected to mention that one of his medications, (not sure if it has something to do with his pacemaker/heart condition, or hip), had changed within a given period, according to questionnaire. He is now worried that policy will be invalid or cost an arm and a leg. Sylvia said that "as you know, he doesn't like to spend money", so she is simply going to call and pay any extra charges. On Sunday, he was feeling pretty low and she phoned one of his students and told individual that Ray wasn't well enough to have lesson. She told him that student had called to cancel lesson and he was more than relieved! Just an indication of how hard he pushes himself, unnecessarily and very foolishly, it seems to me, at least in these circumstances.

At any rate, I sent him a copy of your message to cheer him up. He is always saying how impressed he is with Flamin's endurance! Feel badly that he went riding on Saturday when he probably should have laid low. Do hope the medication kicks in. Nothing worse than starting an extended holiday and already feeling tough. Hard to enjoy what one is supposed to enjoy, friends, family, surroundings, and often difficult to recover with a demanding schedule already mapped out. I developed a fairly nasty sinus infection just before we left for London last July and took me a couple of weeks to beat bug, with drag of going to a local clinic and all that entailed. Very pleased with treatment, etc., but not really how one wants to spend one's time.

Dom Marcellino has committed to the Auchentoshan, Triple Distilled , Lowland, so I'll check that off on list.

Yesterday, Whirlygig and I did the UBC/Marine Drive Loop. Logged 63K by time I was home, then spent most of the early evening watching the poor Canucks struggle to lose to Bruins to force 7th game tomorrow, here in Vancouver! Cora Lee was at WISH so she didn't have to watch the carnage!

Cloudy and cool so far, with threat of rain later this afternoon. This being the case, I will head out for my ride once I've had a spot of breakfast. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio! Andiamo! Andiamo! Andiamo!

IIDD, June 13th

Hello Bridge Fiends!

Cora Lee and I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful evening indeed! Lovely to meet Mary and get to know her along with Nancy and Susan, only having meet them briefly before. Kerry and Tia, sorry you had to leave a bit earlier than others, but understand of course that Tia had to put her Mom to bed!!!

Thanks again, to everyone for the wonderful contributions of food, simply delicious. Everything from the superb appetizers, (M/M, The Weasel Penguin), to the salads, (W/K/, N/G, [I had the overlefts for lunch today and I'd like to suggest that you make larger portions next time!), to the desserts, (S/M, please don't put as much hash in the next set of brownies. I almost recycled your black tin as I was still feeling pretty high this morning! Don't worry, it will be ready for next NRBC, waiting to be refilled!), [Milton, I will be enjoying the remains of your great cake this evening while watching Masterpiece Theatre, taped, and sipping Wild Turkey, (Sorree, Sorree!!), was more than fantabulosos! Maggie wants to be included in the thank you as well. She is feasting on the skin of the sustainably harvested, natural, wild salmon, and her fur is shining as brightly as her devil eyes! Our hope is that she will run away from home in search of the school Whirlygig's/Kerry's fish swam with. With any luck, that it is somewhere in Alaska!

I would be remiss if I did not single out the Weasel Penguin for her expertise on the bridge front, and her willingness to share her considerable skill and knowledge. It's lucky that she can bid well as she she does as her running is in question. However, there is always room for improvement, whether on the tarmac or at the bridge table. Echoing Stiltenheimer, I do hope we can do this again. Perhaps later in the summer when we might actually be able to have a table outside, where Milton can partner with Maggie and say Sorree to her when he goes down, yet again!

Fondestos and Cheers, Cora Lee and Patrizio!

Hi Donna Maria and Heraldo!

Trust you are safely home! Belated Happy Birthday Greetings to Heraldo! Hip Hip Hooray!!! Cora Lee said he hardly looked 70!

We'll leave the Frida Kahlo bag at your place tonight. I took the liberty of taking an extra key to the apartment when we were last over. Plan to have about 50 friends over to watch Canucks tonight. Don't worry as most of them are in their mid-twenties and only drink beer so your wine will be safe. For your sake, I hope the Canucks win or you may well have some fairly extensive redecorating to do! Think positively and I'm sure all will be well, both for Canucks and your lovely suite!

Took Sharktooth Annie around part of Granville Island, in her wheelchair, yesterday, in early afternoon. Loads of activity with kids at water park, tourists, buskers, and the like so she seemed to enjoy and respond to stimulation. Now that weather is warming up plan to make it a regular outing.

Chloë returned from Vegas at 2:00am this morning. Had a good time, wedding went well, etc., but she's glad to be home. She's not really a Vegas person as she found smell of smoke in casinos nauseating and much of food was not to her liking. Came to our place at 7:35am this morning to ask one of us to drive her downtown to her union negotiating meeting. As you can imagine, she was pretty tired after non-stop weekend and then late flight. Will debrief her later.

Thought that you might enjoy following if you've not already seen it:

MY NAME IS JOHNNY CANUCK

Looking forward to "penciling" you in on our extremely busy social calendar. Please send dates as soon as possible or I will not return your key! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Last missive from Flamin' and Sarge:

Greetings from Firenze:

Had a great day yesterday driving through countryside of Toscana went to Greve , castillina and then onto Siena . In wine store in Greve you bought 10 E Card put your wine glass underneath an automatic pour and paid as you went, found this to be a bit impersonal. And did not try anything , found out that chianti is Sangiovese grape good to know and perhaps reason I enjoy it so much. The countryside is absolutely breathtaking , colours are Amazing . We joined up with John and Marion who will be on our bike trip at the hotel in the evening and then to dinner for a fabulous meal. The restaurant was run by a family of three with mom cooking the meals and junior waiting on us. It was rated the best in Florence. Quite rustic only has room for a tight 14 patrons , service was personable and food lived up to the hype very reasonable priced as well, but need reservations. We are now on our way to Bari which is a 7 hour drive hopefully will be able to stop for a swim along the way. The bike trip starts tomorrow so will hopefully wear off the pasta, and wine. Heard Canucks won say replays and crowds on the street. Write zoom. Love to all. M

Not sure if she is having trouble with her new iPad II or just too, too much vino!

You are still so sportive and active. I am proud of you. I did some mountainbike Downhill in Chiang Mai Thailand. I know a guide he knows alot of great trails. but now I just came back from switzerland. have to find a contract for a while to earn some money so i can leave soon again. but by the way I am starting 2 different new businesses in switzerland. And I have to do some Apple Professional Certificates. After that I will do a new overseas project.
Check out my facebook. I bought two new bikes. Wow, after many years I got new bikes. Cannot wait to ride it. Right now I am so busy since I am back. Dont find the time for these activities. My surged shoulder is good. I cannot move same range anymore but for my activities it is enough. so i am ok. I wish your shoulder will be good soon. All the best.

Hi Kids!

Glad rain has stopped! Great day yesterday, in spite of forecast which predicted rain. Clocked 87K, UBC Loop, by time I was back. This morning, Whirlygig, Raymundo and Mike Carter met at our place and we rode around Stanley Park. Very cool and cloudy. Again, not in forecast. Mike peeled off at MacDonald to go home, (His bottom was sore as he has just started to cycle with his new bike, less than a week old!), while rest of us continued on to UBC and on to Marine. Ray headed back at Crown while Whirlygig and I did Wesbrook Loop and then back down Foreshore Hill. I left Giorgio at MacDonald and 3rd and returned to Young's to do shopping for Book Club Bridge domani, 71K on clock, 78K by time I was home.

Just had time for a quick java and shower when Rosemary and Andre popped by for java, just past 2:00pm. They have been very busy with one thing and another so this was only time we could get together. Cora Lee was downtown trying to organize Friends of VPL office so she arrived a few minutes later. Had a good visit. They asked after you two. Rosemary will return to England next Wednesday. Andre seems much recovered and hopes to join her in France in a week or two, once he has go ahead from his dottore.

Denise just knocked on our door. She is here all weekend to try and sell what they don't want. Ken arrives later, next week, by bus. They will take what they don't sell back by rented van/truck. Apparently, new owner is a single woman. An artist from California. That's all Denise knows as she's never even talked to her! Other than the fact that she doesn't drive so who knows about parking spot!

Time for shouldares on floor in living room to watch Canucks/Bruins! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Chloé!

How is Vegas? Trust all goes well!!!

You will be pleased to know that we sat down to watch the last episode of The Borghias last night. Maggster was sleeping on her chair and Nana sat down, almost right on top of her! When I realized that she hadn't paid any attention to where Maggs was, I yelled out but too, too late! Fortunately, she just squished a small part of her as opposed to sitting right on top of her sleeping form! Had she done that, I'm sure she would have crushed her ribs as she almost fell backwards into chair! Maggs squeaked in protest but seemed fine and settled herself back on Nana's tummy for rest of programme, only moving when Nicole came to patio door with Molly, to ask if we'd walk her before we left for Bard on the Beach, and afterwards as well. She is working tonight and Prince Valiant is in Kamloops! True Love, I guess!!!

Hello to one and all and congratulations to Bride and Groom. Love and Cheers, Dad!

Hi Donna Florida and Cactus!

Hadn't heard from Flash in some time, (our Open House last December!), and received this message a few days ago:

> Date: Tue Jun 07 11:46:19 PDT 2011
> From: "Alastair Bird"
> Subject: Mrs. A - Kirsten's Grandmother
> To: "Patrick Dunn"

> Hi Pat, It just crossed my mind that we didn't inform you of Kirsten's grandmother's passing. She died last week, having recently turned 96. The family was down for a memorial this weekend at the house, which was nice, if somewhat tough to get through for Kirsten and her sisters. Thought you might like to know. And on another note - thanks for all the updates you've been sending. We have, as always, been tremendously remiss in our socializing over the last little while and certainly in the last 6 months or so with Mrs. A becoming less and less able. Kirsten was her power of attorney - it kept her rather busy. At any rate, I trust you are all well. We shall meet up soon.Best,-Alastair.

At any rate, I replied to him, just a few minutes ago, after we called last night:

Hi Flash!

Terrific to chat last night. Again, sincere condolences.

As I mentioned, Cactus and Donna Florida will be arriving on Wednesday, July 6th, in Bellingham. We'll collect them and they'll have a day or so in town to look around before we leave for the Okanagan, with Flamin' and Sarge, for 8th/9th/10th, returning to Vancouver on Monday, 11th. That night or the 12th would probably work for a get-together, or potentially Thursday, 14th, depending on the VI sojourn. Grogg is over next Thursday/Friday and I'll quiz him about their stay, as well as sending Berkeley folks an email to see what they think they'd like to do about that part of visit.

Not sure what your family plans for Canada Day happen to be but you are more than welcome to join us for The Harbour Terrace Block Party! Your girls could play at water park and have their faces painted while their Father sips malt! Anyway, feel free to drop in even if you have other commitments. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Just wondering if you have decided when you want to go to VI, how long you will stay, etc. Folk Fest starts on Friday evening, July 15th, so imagine you could return as late as that afternoon, should you want to do so. Give dates in question some thought and let us know what you imagine itinerary to be.
Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

IIDD, June 9th

Dearest Del Vecchio! (I address you thusly even though there is little probability that you will reach ripe old age, given your persistent death wish mentality.)

For your information, I have had little opportunity to respond to your more than pestering emails, given the fact that I have had to devote a certain amount of my valuable time and energy to dealing with your bumbling, would-be assassins, the highly over-rated, and now defunct, Obregon Brothers. I am sorry to inform you that the Obregons have done gone away, with a little help from my friends, but I get ahead of myself, Goofy Gustavo.

The picture of you with your eyes closed at last Sunday's soirée, gave me an idea for dealing with the above-mentioned hit men. Enlisting Maggie's help, we waited on the patio, in the dead of Wednesday night, (pardon the turn of phrase), for the two punks to arrive. When I heard them stalking up the path I gave the command, "Dog", to Maggie and instinct took over. She leapt onto their backs and with four fearless slashes of her razor sharp claws, blinded the oafs before they could utter so much as a "Madre Mia" or "Holy Enchilada"! I immediately stuffed lye-soaked rags into their mouths to further silence them and then bound their arms behind their backs using plastic slip ties that Lars at Reckless was happy to supply, especially when I told him what good use I planned to make of them!

I took special pleasure in tightening the restraints to the point that blood welled up from the ligature marks on their wrists, and then proceeded to walk, or more correctly, stumble, the stumble bums towards the marina where Barnacle Branymir moors The Inside Passage. By this time it was 3:00am and nary a soul was out, (although two souls, given the fact that the Brothers Obregon do indeed possess souls, were about to be launched towards Hades), and about so I had no fear of being observed as we three made our way, two more reluctantly than some, down the walkway to the marina.

Ragin' Bull had given me the key code, (Last Monday Whirlygig and I stopped by the marina in Steveston to see what progress Barnacle Man was making on his hull repair. While chatting and inspecting the scraping already completed, I asked for the password, suggesting I would need it if I was to be there when he returned, the following week, to help him berth the Inside Passage.), so I had little difficulty gaining entrance, and walked my sorry companions down the plank, so to speak, to the berth, now empty, where Branko's Folly is ordinarily to be found. I whispered into each right ear of the strangely acquiescent Obregon Brothers, telling them to kneel down at the edge of the floating dock.

Moaning pitifully, for that was all the sound that escaped their blocked mouths, the lye obviously doing a rather nasty job on their mouths and the lining of their stomachs, they obeyed forthwith. Once they were positioned to my satisfaction, I took out my trusty Swiss Army knife and sliced off most of each of their left ears. Not much left of those aural appendages after two quick swipes. I'm happy to report that the blade is so sharp that I fully believe they felt but little discomfort, or else the almost surgical nature of the cut was such that it probably caused little pain, compared to that which continued to be generated as the lye continued on its merry way, having at the linings of their throats and bowels.

I took out my Nagant, the standard-issue sidearm for all Russian army and police officers during WW II, together with its important modification, a Bramit silencer, (I had saved, from a vicious shark attack, a member of the Medellín Cartel who was lying low in Mexico, this past February, while he was swimming at a beach near Guayabitos, close to the house we had rented and to show his deep appreciation and gratitude, he presented me with the weaponry. I concealed it in the two K's of coke he included as part of the thank you gift and told the boarder officials, both US and Canadian, that it was special pastry flour and we were waved through!), and placed the cold barrel against the back of the head of one Obregon Brother, (Juan, I believe, was first, then José), and then the other. Each, in his turn, turned to look up at me, (as if that did any good given the fact that their bloody orbs were sightless), and gave me such a beseeching look that I can only surmise that they were thanking me for the bullet about to scramble their brains so bringing an end to their internal agony, so to speak. As to their eternal agony, I leave it to you, Del Vechio, to cogitate upon, for you sent these vermin to their maker as surely as I squeezed the trigger of my silenced pistol.

Two barely audible hiccups later and the once cocky Brothers Obregon didn't look quite so jaunty with most of their faces missing and much of what little grey matter they possessed, now showing a rather nice pinkish tint, speckling the still water beside the dock. I had had the foresight to wrap a piece of rope around their ankles, after they assumed the kneeling position, (I sincerely trust they used the few minutes it took to lash their ankles to make their peace with Lucifer, given that they were in the perfect position to ask for forgiveness.), and lowered their now lifeless bodies into the drink, a few bubbles breaking the surface as the last air escaped their lungs.

Tying each rope to a different bollard, I rinsed my hands in the cool brine and walked cooly away, back to the Island Inn, where I was pleased to find that Maggie had removed all traces of the blood which had leaked from the ruined eyes onto the patio deck. Once I'd shepherded the captives onto the path leading to the Seawall, I had glanced back to see my feline accomplice licking, with obvious satisfaction, the shiny droplets which flecked the deck surface like a Jackson Pollock drip painting. Good Kitty!

I wasn't worried that the bodies would be discovered. In fact, I assumed that their bloated carcasses would rise to the surface by the time Barnacle Branko returned The Inside Passage to her home berth and would make for rather good dock bumpers and certainly, if nothing else, rather interesting topics of conversation for those aboard, as well as grim reminders of what awaits those who choose to play a deadly game of cat and mouse, so to speak, with Maggie the Malevolent and her partner in crime, Il Conductore.

I remain, as ever, your Obsequious Servant, Patrizio, Diavolo Rosso con la Barba!

PS: I have included copies of your original threats so that if anything untoward should befall either The Maggster or I, those receiving this email, (CC), will seek revenge in a most cruel and unusual way. In short, you will dream about being dispatched like the Obregon Brothers. Furthermore, you won't be able to spit on my "Insurance Policy' for you won't have a tongue by then!

PPS: You will be receiving a parcel from FedEx in the next day or so. In it, you will find two left ears, floating in a jorgum of bourbon. I advise you not to drink the fluid as it is two parts strychnine, one part mash.

PPPS: On sober second thought, it probably wouldn't hurt you, given the chain cleaner you usually knock back!

PPPPS: I "feel" fine about the Obregon Brothers, especially when they "fell" on their knees!

PPPPPS: "Sorry"! I spit on your "sorry"! You don't even begin to know how "sorry" you will be, my friend! Maggie likes fresh blood but I think she is even fonder of Chinese stir fry and not with soy cubes either!

Sorry to bother you again, as I know you are very busy man, but I forgot to
ask you about the Obregon brothers. How do you fell about the Obregon
brothers?

- Cici ("Da Cheech") Del Vechio

IIDD, June 1st

Hi Flamin' and Sarge!

Trust that the sky has brightened and the vino is flowing! Bit of spotty rain yesterday, most of the morning and early afternoon but then cleared up quite nicely by around 3:00pm, just in time for me to ride to my physio, opposite Edgewater Casino. Did a few errands after appointment, up to Safeway on 4th, for a scant 25K, but it was so pleasantly warm, little if any wind, that I quite enjoyed the scenery, especially the babes on grass around Kits Pool!

Whirlygig and I rode out to UBC at 8:30am, along Spanish Banks and on to Marine Drive to Arthur Lang, cutting of just over the bridge to ride out to Iona Island. It was unusually calm, often a very strong wind, I suppose because it is so close to water, and we really enjoyed relative quiet, chatting about all and sundry. Fellow cyclist pointed out a huge bald eagle on our way back. Took its presence as a good omen for Canucks/Boston game tonight! Giorgio showed me a nifty little short-cut over bridge one had to take to get to airport before AL was constructed. Takes one past River Rock Casino and thence to CSTB. There to Heather and all the way down hill, once past climb to 41st, of course), to Seawall and back home. I accompanied Whirlygig to Cornwall and MacDonald and then waved goodbye, making for Harbour Terrace. Few minor dipsy-doodles and I was home with 65K on odometer.

Quite cloudy during most of ride and North Shore was really socked in, mountain tops barely visible, if at all. Barely a cloud in the sky, now, just before 4:30pm. Will be leaving shortly to stroll up to 2nd and Vine to watch the game and have dinner with out friends, Dawn and Gerry Martin, in from Terrace. Great folk and we've not seen them for a bit so will be fun to catch up. View from their place is simply spectacular. Can't remember if either of you have ever been there with us, probably for fireworks. If so, you'll know stunning city/ocean panorama.

Chloë left for Vegas this morning. Just before 8:00am, Gaelan and Jean-Paul picked her up. Corinne happened to be outside giving something to one of people from church hiring committee and said hello to chauffeurs. Apparently, George, Gaelan's father, was on phone and pleading with her not to go! I gather he is to start his chemo shortly but it seems that he may well think that he won't be around when goils return on Monday! Probably irrational but not a good sign, about his health, no matter how you look at it. Sad situation, especially given horrendous lawsuit family is currently fighting with George's two sisters who seem intent on doing him out of a $20 million plus estate, given their parents' real estate holdings in Dunbar, both commercial and private property. Couldn't be any crazier than Cora Lee's soap!!!

Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Kids!

Trust you are alive and well and enjoying Rome!

This from Toshi:

Dear Patrick, Corinne, Chloe, Melvin and Pierre

Patrick, thank you for your mail and pictures!

First of all, it was absolutely wonderful to see you all!!
I enjoyed my stay in Vancouver and visit to Everett.

Although it had been almost 7 years or more since my last visit to Vancouver,
thinking of you and actually seeing you made me feel welcomed and great!
I'm so happy that I could spend my birthday with my dearest host family in my favorite city!
Island Inn (Of course, Hotel Kits too!) is always my home to me same as Japan.
Thank you everyone!!

The visit was too short, but I promise to visit you again, hopefully soon.

Now I'm back in Japan, started work today, already missing Vancouver.

I arrived Japan on Saturday night (in Japan time).
Happy to see my mom looked great and healthy!
We had lots to talk about including Patrick and Corinne are coming to Japan next May.
We talked about where you can go and stay in Kansai Area (west part of Japan).
I talked all relatives you know (Mitsuru, Kishiko, Yukiko, Emiko and Kuniko).
They are so excited!!

My relatives came to visit my place on Sunday and we told them about your visit too.
They own Yakitori (grilled chicken on sticks) restaurant in Osaka which is located
close to Universal Studios Japan and KAIYUKAN Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums
in the world. They heard lots about you from us, so they are excited to see you in Japan.
We are planning to have a party for you at their restaurant when you come!
You will have no problem hanging out Kansai Area such as Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto and Nara!!
If we can be any of your support, please let us know. We are happy to do that!

So, how was you BBQ on Saturday?
Hope you had a great weather and wonderful time!
So pitty that I had to miss that opportunity.

Well, thank you again for your warm greeting!!!
I love you all very much.

Sincerey, Toshiko

Dear GiGi!

You should count yourself lucky that you had two hours of pain free
existence! Bring dessert for 12 or else discover what it is to suffer the
wrath of Team II, whether from 1986 or 2011! Rust never sleeps, my friend.
And you didn't spare Maggie as you so duplicitiously declared. Good that we
left her on high alert when we went to see Bard on the Beach to see As You
Like It. The remains of the entrails of The Rosato Brothers, now dispatched,
as you phrase it so adroitly, adorn her dish, just as she likes it!. Thanks
for that. She won't need to be fed for a week now!!!

See you tomorrow, if you have the nerve, Gustavino! Come by a bit early to
dispose of the bodies. You'll find their dismembered parts neatly bagged on
the deck. Cheers, Il Conductore!

IIDD, June 7th

Dear Il Conductore (aka Dr. Pooh),

I enjoyed reading your email. It only took me two hours - two hours which I
will never get back again. Ever.

I don't even know where to begin. Responding to long emails is a daunting
task - do you address the first part first, the second part or the third?

No matter. I've already dispatched (a double entrendre) the Rosato Brothers
to the Island Inn tonight. Be prepared. I've spared Maggie the Cat.

I've got to run to see the hockey game at a friend's house, so I must leave
you now.

For tomorrow night, I've been assigned dessert duty. I plan on bringing a
pie. How many shall I bring?

XOXO
Gormest Gustavo

P.S. I saw a picture of the Team II squash team in the VRC lounge from
1986(?). It featured a much younger-looking, red-bearded, devil-like Il
Conductore standing in the middle (I think Ricky Ng and Brian Covington are
also in the picture).

Dearest Del Vecchio! (I address you thusly even though there is little
probability that you will reach ripe old age, given your persistent death
wish mentality.)

For your information, I have had little opportunity to respond to your more
than pestering emails, given the fact that I have had to devote a certain
amount of my valuable time and energy to dealing with your bumbling,
would-be assassins, the highly over-rated, and now defunct, Obregon
Brothers. I am sorry to inform you that the Obregons have done gone away,
with a little help from my friends, but I get ahead of myself, Goofy
Gustavo.

The picture of you with your eyes closed at last Sunday's soirée, gave me an
idea for dealing with the above-mentioned hit men. Enlisting Maggie's help,
we waited on the patio, in the dead of Wednesday night, (pardon the turn of
phrase), for the two punks to arrive. When I heard them stalking up the path
I gave the command, "Dog", to Maggie and instinct took over. She leapt onto
their backs and with four fearless slashes of her razor sharp claws, blinded
the oafs before they could utter so much as a "Madre Mia" or "Holy
Enchilada"! I immediately stuffed lye-soaked rags into their mouths to
further silence them and then bound their arms behind their backs using
plastic slip ties that Lars at Reckless was happy to supply, especially when
I told him what good use I planned to make of them!

I took special pleasure in tightening the restraints to the point that blood
welled up from the ligature marks on their wrists, and then proceeded to
walk, or more correctly, stumble, the stumble bums towards the marina where
Barnacle Branymir moors The Inside Passage. By this time it was 3:00am and
nary a soul was out, (although two souls, given the fact that the Brothers
Obregon do indeed possess souls, were about to be launched towards Hades),
and about so I had no fear of being observed as we three made our way, two
more reluctantly than some, down the walkway to the marina.

Ragin' Bull had given me the key code, (Last Monday Whirlygig and I stopped
by the marina in Steveston to see what progress Barnacle Man was making on
his hull repair. While chatting and inspecting the scraping already
completed, I asked for the password, suggesting I would need it if I was to
be there when he returned, the following week, to help him berth the Inside
Passage.), so I had little difficulty gaining entrance, and walked my sorry
companions down the plank, so to speak, to the berth, now empty, where
Branko's Folly is ordinarily to be found. I whispered into each right ear of
the strangely acquiescent Obregon Brothers, telling them to kneel down at
the edge of the floating dock.

Moaning pitifully, for that was all the sound that escaped their blocked
mouths, the lye obviously doing a rather nasty job on their mouths and the
lining of their stomachs, they obeyed forthwith. Once they were positioned
to my satisfaction, I took out my trusty Swiss Army knife and sliced off
most of each of their left ears. Not much left of those aural appendages
after two quick swipes. I'm happy to report that the blade is so sharp that
I fully believe they felt but little discomfort, or else the almost surgical
nature of the cut was such that it probably caused little pain, compared to
that which continued to be generated as the lye continued on its merry way,
having at the linings of their throats and bowels.

I took out my Nagant, the standard-issue sidearm for all Russian army and
police officers during WW II, together with its important modification, a
Bramit silencer, (I had saved, from a vicious shark attack, a member of the
Medellín Cartel who was lying low in Mexico, this past February, while he
was swimming at a beach near Guayabitos, close to the house we had rented
and to show his deep appreciation and gratitude, he presented me with the
weaponry. I concealed it in the two K's of coke he included as part of the
thank you gift and told the boarder officials, both US and Canadian, that it
was special pastry flour and we were waved through!), and placed the cold
barrel against the back of the head of one Obregon Brother, (Juan, I
believe, was first, then José), and then the other. Each, in his turn,
turned to look up at me, (as if that did any good given the fact that their
bloody orbs were sightless), and gave me such a beseeching look that I can
only surmise that they were thanking me for the bullet about to scramble
their brains so bringing an end to their internal agony, so to speak. As to
their eternal agony, I leave it to you, Del Vechio, to cogitate upon, for
you sent these vermin to their maker as surely as I squeezed the trigger of
my silenced pistol.

Two barely audible hiccups later and the once cocky Brothers Obregon didn't
look quite so jaunty with most of their faces missing and much of what
little grey matter they possessed, now showing a rather nice pinkish tint,
speckling the still water beside the dock. I had had the foresight to wrap a
piece of rope around their ankles, after they assumed the kneeling position,
(I sincerely trust they used the few minutes it took to lash their ankles to
make their peace with Lucifer, given that they were in the perfect position
to ask for forgiveness.), and lowered their now lifeless bodies into the
drink, a few bubbles breaking the surface as the last air escaped their
lungs.

Tying each rope to a different bollard, I rinsed my hands in the cool brine
and walked cooly away, back to the Island Inn, where I was pleased to find
that Maggie had removed all traces of the blood which had leaked from the
ruined eyes onto the patio deck. Once I'd shepherded the captives onto the
path leading to the Seawall, I had glanced back to see my feline accomplice
licking, with obvious satisfaction, the shiny droplets which flecked the
deck surface like a Jackson Pollock drip painting. Good Kitty!

I wasn't worried that the bodies would be discovered. In fact, I assumed
that their bloated carcasses would rise to the surface by the time Barnacle
Branko returned The Inside Passage to her home berth and would make for
rather good dock bumpers and certainly, if nothing else, rather interesting
topics of conversation for those aboard, as well as grim reminders of what
awaits those who choose to play a deadly game of cat and mouse, so to speak,
with Maggie the Malevolent and her partner in crime, Il Conductore.

I remain, as ever, your Obsequious Servant, Patrizio, Diavolo Rosso con la
Barba!

PS: I have included copies of your original threats so that if anything
untoward should befall either The Maggster or I, those receiving this email,
(CC), will seek revenge in a most cruel and unusual way. In short, you will
dream about being dispatched like the Obregon Brothers. Furthermore, you
won't be able to spit on my "Insurance Policy' for you won't have a tongue
by then!

PPS: You will be receiving a parcel from FedEx in the next day or so. In it,
you will find two left ears, floating in a jorgum of bourbon. I advise you
not to drink the fluid as it is two parts strychnine, one part mash.

PPPS: On sober second thought, it probably wouldn't hurt you, given the
chain cleaner you usually knock back!

PPPPS: I "feel" fine about the Obregon Brothers, especially when they "fell"
on their knees!

PPPPPS: "Sorry"! I spit on your "sorry"! You don't even begin to know how
"sorry" you will be, my friend! Maggie likes fresh blood but I think she is
even fonder of Chinese stir fry and not with soy cubes either!

Sorry to bother you again, as I know you are very busy man, but I forgot to
ask you about the Obregon brothers. How do you fell about the Obregon
brothers?

- Cici ("Da Cheech") Del Vechio

IIDD, June 6th

Hi Toshi!

Very pleased to learn that you are back safely! Also, wonderful to hear that your Mother is well. Thanks again for all the lovely presents. Furthermore, thank you for already arranging what sounds like a more than wonderful visit to Japan. Please pass along our fond regards to everyone.

Saturday's bbq was loads of fun. Weather cooperated so we were able to spend a good part of the evening on the patio. Corinne did wonderful appetizers: small pizzas with mozzarella/tomatoe/fresh basil topping, bbq'd chicken wings, all sorts of dips with potatoe chips/tortilla chips. As if this wasn't enough, she did numerous different sausages, (turkey/chicken/pork), and more chicken thighs on bbq, along with salmon filets for non-meat eaters. I made two potatoe salads, one with non-dairy mayonnaise for vegans, plus a really delicious lentil/cherry tomatoe salad, again, courtesy of Cora Lee. Agneta brought a tasty deep dish cheery pie/cake and Gillian, a wonderful carrot cake. Plenty of wine, red and white, so more than a lovely evening all around. Pierrre, Chloë and Corinne watched a movie until about 12:30am, but I went to bed to read after I had put away leftovers and loaded dishwasher.

Enjoyed another fine evening, last night, at the apartment, (high rise on Frances, not far from Commercial Drive in East Van), of a fairly new member to our Book Club. Milton, (Kiang), practiced law in Hong Kong for 13 years and finally tired of the rat race there. Back home to Vancouver, about two years or so ago, trying to survive as a freelance writer. Lovely chap but I give him a hard time, from cycling, (He left his bike locked to bench on our deck for over a week, after a bike ride together, a few weeks ago!), to his predilection for bourbon over malt! At any rate, view from 11th floor is simply stunning and we had a wonderful time, along with Whirlygig/Kerry and her 7 year old daughter Tia. Milton had yummy hors d'oeuvres: jumbo stuffed green olives, crackers and a beguiling, smoked Gouda, I think; delicious salmon/chicken on bbq, with rice; I made a cabbage salad with Japanese noodles/sunflower seeds/sliced almonds, rice vinegar/olive oil dressing and Kerry made a wonderful deep dish raspberry dessert with mountains of whipped cream. Malt, (I brought tail end of a bottle as I knew he would only have blended whiskey!), to settle our tummies and all was well with the world!

His apartment is quite roomy and comfortable but rather a mess, to put it lightly! One more thing to chastise him about. I sent this message earlier this morning:

Foist and foremost, both Cora Lee and I want to thank you for the more than lovely evening: splendiferous view, gorgeous appetizers, fabuloso bbq, plentious appealing hootch, (blended scotch excepted!), and, of course, the more than scintillating conversation, animated, witty repartee! Other than the fact that the evening was spoiled by having to spend hours on kitchen decontamination duty, the gathering was a singular success, probably the highlight of our social calendar. Can barely remember last time we have dined in less salubrious circumstances, except, perhaps, aboard Barnacle Branko's Inside Passage, and survived, lived to tell the sad tale of bachelor slovenliness and terminal clutter. Please expect a delivery from FedEx, early this coming week, an assortment of industrial strength cleansers and fumigants, which I trust you will put to good use if you ever manage to rouse yourself from your Lay Z Boy and apply a little elbow grease to each and every corner of your apartment. I spit on teenagers' rooms now that I have seen your pad! Have you bothered to apply for the reality TV show, Hoarders? Use what you have even if it is, especially since it is, in this case, a pigsty!

I remain, as ever, your Faithful and Humble Servant, Patrizio Dunn, Director, Hazardous Waste and Toxic Site Cleanup, Molly Maid, Inc.

His reply:

Hi Patrick,

I enjoyed having you all over last night. I had a lot of fun as well!

When I woke up this morning, I was surprised to see how clean my kitchen
was, and for a moment, thought that the kitchen fairy had come along last
night.

But then, I remembered how you and Corinne helped me to clean the place.
Thank you - I must host these gathering more often!

Went for a grand ride out to Steveston today. (Parenthetically, I am the proud wearer of many sweatshirts and jackets, per esempio, no longer deemed "in vogue" by the Fashion Polizei. I wear them, and delightedly so, for cycling, as I spit on the lycra clad riders in their sponsor plastered, skin tight garb! The fact that such cyclisti whizzzzzzzzz by me and I can't even dream of keeping up with them has nothing to do with my dislike of their streamlined, form fitting garments. (Must say, however, that last Saturday we were passed by a group of four female sveltoids and The Brotherhood managed to up the pace for a few kilometres, drawn into the chase by the rather attractive posteriors which presented themselves to us, wiggling ever so deliciously, like a carrot before a donkey's nose!) Left at 11:30am, (Whirlygig had a few commitments in morning), and made for UBC, out Marine to Arthur Lang and thence to marina to pop in on Barnacle Man. Found him on ladder, scraping paint above water line. Progress is slow but he is making headway. While we were chatting, welder came by to see about part Branymir wants to have added to rudder. Quite a small job, in scheme of things, and so low priority for welder. Ragin' has been after him for some time so he was very pleased when he stopped by.

Based on work yet to accomplish, he feels he'll have boat back in water by early next week. Delighted for him as it has been quite an ordeal. I didn't mind working on Milton's ceramic stove top for 15 or 20 minutes but I'm not prepared to spend days, or even hours, scraping paint! His boat, his task alone, as far as i"m concerned. Also glad to learn that his arthritis has not really hampered him on this latest project. Truly happy that this is the case as work is grueling, laborious and boring enough without having to endure debilitating arthritic pain. By the time I was back home, with a bit of dips-doodling, had logged 72K.

Once again, will be in touch as soon as we have made more definite plans. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Pics of Milton's apartmento. Now I know why it's such a mess. He's actually blind!!!

IIDD, June 5th

Hi again, Brenda Louise!

Belated Happy Birthday! Hip Hip Hooray! Pleased that things have "normalized" somewhat , with Ian and his family. Wonderful beginning!

Last evening, saw first two periods of Game 2 but had to go out shortly after start of Third Period. Cora Lee and I attended a remarkable concert at Trinity Church, (This is the congregation that she has been involved with for many years.), put on by Koncert Kontinuum, a group that Katy Hedalen, who sings, (soprano), in church choir, founded with a number of friends: Karen Lee- Morland, piano/vocals; Yuel Yawney, violin; Stefan Hintersteininger, cello/arranger; Chris Harvey, drums/vocal; and Joseph Blood, vocals/guitar. Entitled The Sound of Silence, it featured the songs of Simon & Garfunkel as well as some of the short works of Franz Schuber. Simply amazing performances, on all levels. Think I enjoyed the classical pieces almost more than the S/G works, although most were some of my favourite early songs: The Boxer, Cecelia, Mrs. Robinson, Bridge Over Troubled Water. The piano duets and the violin/cello interplay were incredibly powerful, moving, almost mesmerizing at times. This by way of saying that we were in our seats as the third period was underway, Canucks down 1/2, when we left our place. After the fifth work, Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major, someone in audience shouted out "Canucks won!" Church erupted! Didn't find out details until Intermission but was delighted, of course, to hear the winning result. Almost glad were weren't able to watch as I'm sure it was a nail-biter!

I'm reading Philip Kerr's If The Dead Rise Not, Bernie Gunther mystery, set in Berlin in 1934. Do you know this series? If not, I suggest you start with Berlin Noir: March Violets, The Pale Criminal, A German Requiem. This trilogy sets the stage for Bernie. Subsequent novels explore later and earlier periods in his life. Next book for Book Club is martin Amis' The Pregnant Widow. Just read a few chapters but like it so far, quite "English" in a certain witty, sharply intelligent, literary way that I find most appealing, characters sparring verbally, with barbed thrusts and ironic parries.

Welcome to Mac World with your iPhone! Flamin' just received an iPad II for her birthday. We both bought first iPad for our trip to Europe last year. Since Cora Lee is using mine, now, for her eBooks and newspaper/magazine downloads, I think I'll probably buy latest model for or planned trip to Australia/Japan next March-May. More details when we concretize trip.

Banacle Man is Ragin' Bull, Branko Peric, friend who lives on his boat, The Inside Passage, docked at marina down the way from us. He moved boat to Steveston last week to have it put in dry dock for maintenance/repairs. Yesterday morning, cycled out there again, with four friends, but no sign of Barnacle Branko. He was either still sleeping or having breakfast at Fisherman's Cafe, nearbye. Continued on our regular route and made our way back, eventually, towards UBC, losing Whirlygig near 37th and Cypress as he made for home with 45K on odometer. Rod, Raymundo and I cycled along Marine Drive and up through Wesbrook Village, then east along 16th to Imperial.

Ray continued along 16th, making for his place while Rod and I headed down Imperial. At 37th and Crown, Rod waved goodbye and I made for Marine again. Once there I noticed that my odometer had stopped at 61.98K. Initially, I assumed that the battery might have died but upon sober reflection I realized that when Rod and I had come to Crown and 34th, I had turned right and brushed his front wheel. I thought he knew we were turning but he didn't realize we had reached intersection in question and we narrowly avoided what could have been a nasty collision. At any rate, I continued on, making my way back towards Wesbrook Village. Had a strong head wind so decided I'd get that part of ride over before I stopped to adjust odometer magnet on wheel spoke which I presumed had been jostled out of range of transmitter on right fork. On the street which abuts the Endowment Lands, stopped by a massive stump as I decided I'd take advantage of cover it provided to empty my full bladder! Feeling much more comfortable, I twisted magnet closer to transmitter, I was back online and ready to ride forever, not having to grit my teeth every time I went over a bump in the road!

As I wanted to log at least 100K, I decided to retrace my steps and calculate distance traversed between sideswipe and stop to reset odometer/relieve myself, in order to have an exact count. Turned out to be almost exactly 6K and by time I had completed my third loop I was well on my way to my goal. Psychologically, I find it very helpful to have "money in the bank", so to speak. I proceeded to follow remainder of what has become a regular route, of late, around UBC and neighbouring thoroughfares, to have 90K on odometer by time I started down Foreshore Hill, (2K from top to bottom), knowing then that I would have done 108K, (2K for descent, 10K from UBC to Harbour Terrace, plus "unclocked" 6K), by time I was finished. As it turned out, I logged 109K witht he help of a little dipsy-doodling en route! More than please with the outing, I rinsed out my camel pack, ate a banana and lay down to help Bernie solve his latest murder and dozed off for a very pleasant nap, a purring cat atop my chest!

Chloë just left to drive Pierre back to Everett. Cora Lee is at church. Bit of a goodbye party, after service, as current minister is leaving. Church will be closing in two years and Sally resigned in order to allow an interim minister to explore options for amalgamation with another west side congregation. Will finish a few more messages and then head out for a short, "stretch" ride. Plan to take Mom out for a stroll, in her wheelchair, around Seawall into Granville Island, as it is such a lovely day, when I return. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!
