Hi Xavierino!

Happy Birthday to You! Happy Birthday to You! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow...Hip Hip Hooray!!! Much love adn all the best on your birthday, Pierre!

How is your weather? Close friend of ours, Penny, who lives in North London, was over in Toronto for two weeks, to celebrate Robbie Burns Day with a good friend she made while living there in '70's. At any rate, she came home to discover more snow than she's had in Canada!

Unfortunately, on the Home Front, have to report that your Nana's foot has taken a nasty turn for the worse. She had a physio session last Saturday and her foot started to itch on Sunday evening. By Monday morning it was puffy and covered with an alarming rash. I took her to MSJ's where her surgeon saw her and prescribed some cortisone cream. He didn't think it was infected so that was some relief. Just an allergic reaction to the oil physio had used, we think! However, to make matters worse she came down with a horrible cold/cough on top of everything else! Consequently I had to sit in for her at bridge, just after noon, that day, with Rosita. Close friend, Mary Vickers, came to collect us for a fund raiser, (Stephen Lewis Foundation, Grandmothers Campaign, which supports community-based organizations working with HIV/AIDS sufferers in 15 African countries), at St Mary's in Kerrisdale. The Royal Chauffeur was to be seconded in Her Majesty's place as Mary Queen of Scotch was unable to find another player of such calibre on such short notice!

Quite pleasant afternoon. Only on other male there so we were literally surrounded by The Sisterhood! Once again, (as per last Friday's evening of bridge with Pitchforks), cards were poor for everyone but it was still a lot of fun. Helen, close friend of Mary's, was fourth. Only hand I really had was a pre-emptive 3 Club bid. I had Ace, King, Queen and five others. Really had more points than a usual three bid and I was so bored with passing all the time I bid 5 Clubs. Clarisse had the Ace and three others! Our hands fit extraordinarily well and I ended up making a Grand Slam, though unbid of course.

Nana felt even worse on Tuesday morning so our GP's receptionist was able to squeeze her in just before 10:00am. Her Royal Majesty is now on steroids and her foot seems to be responding, if slowly. Rash is not as itchy or as raised. Still worrying and uncomfortable, needless to say.

Tuesday evening I curl with Flamin' and Sarge. Sarge was away in Ottawa so Flamin' was Skip and another lad, Luke, played Second. We played Team Sullivan and they were out for blood as we beat them first time around. Stole one in each of 1st and 2nd ends. Third was a fiasco, a veritable catastrophe and they scored 5! Doing well in the 4th when Hamish, (Third), burned my second shot. A bit later on he stopped a rock that was clearly going out of the house and opposition insisted it wasn't so we had to replace it. Fluke shot by their Third buried his rock for shot. Flamin' was trying to outdraw on her last stone but tipped one of their guards and they counted two! Down 7/2 we eked out one in fifth and then stole two in 6th. Had plenty of time for another end and we exerted a fair bit of pressure to have three stones in house, 1st and 3rd, with two of our guards stacked together, securing our position. On Hamish's first rock Flamin'decided to remove our guards to have a chance to play their single in the house. Wouldn't you know it, he missed the guards but chipped out their stone!

Can't remember exactly what happened over next few shots but one of our stones just nudged the 12' at the top of the house, only counter, with just Skips left to throw. Flamin' put her first in the house to have it taken out. Consequently, on Flamin's last shot she had to draw to go for a tie, at the very best, a loss, of course, if other skip outdraws or takes out a counter. Everyone held their breath as final rock came down the ice. I thought it was heavy and we were fine but it decelerated considerably but slow as molasses it kept coming, finally across the T-line, inching its way through the house, almost touching our back counter, to have Hamish sweep it out!

On paper, probably should have won but coming back from 7/2 and not really working together, (Hamish really gets cranky when he is losing! Remind you of anyone on the doubles court?), we were more than happy to salvage a tie. Not quite sure what this means to standings as were were in first place. Depends on results for those teams chasing us!

Went for a short ride on Wednesday morning with Whirlygig. Raymondo said it was too wet. Not really, as it turned out. Giorgio picked me up at 10:00am and we made our way around Seawall to Stanley Park. Seawall was closed just after spot where we normally peel off to go on road. I wanted to do and up-and-over LG but Whirlissimo was whining about soggy shoes and being soaked, (It really was not raining, more a light drizzle, by then, if anything at all.), so we just made for Prospect Point and back home. I accompanied him to past Kits Pool and then a few dipsy-doodles later, around Kits Point, and I was home with 52.33K on the clock.

That evening we had dinner here with two tables of bridge. Mr Fixit, Wayne Connors, a very close friend of the Sutherlands, is here from St John's to remodel the ensuite bathroom and ski for a week or so, at Whistler. He is a tremendous player and wonderful teacher so it is a pleasure to play with or against him. Whirlygig, Ragin' and Kid Chelene made up rest of players along with Sarge/Clara/Dusty. Nana played a few hands until Ragin' arrived. He is taking Spanish lessons and is quite enjoying them.

Have to sign off now as I'm up at 5:30am tomorrow to take Clara and Dusty to YVR. As you might know, they are flying to Orlando to meet George and Barb for a Caribbean cruise! Interestingly enough, it is on the same vessel, Norwegian Sun, that we, (together with Flamin'/Sarge, Grog/Lurchesca), sailed on when we went around The Horn in 2008. Much, Much Love Fondestos and Cheers, Poppa!!!

Pics: Bridge on Monday with unbelievable desserts! The Royal Foot!

Majesty's Foot: Story Two!

Picture speaks a thousand words - I'm feeling Her Majesty's royal
pain! She deserves at least a competent royal servant around to
compensate. At least!

Hi Ruthless, et al!

Don't worry about competent servants, My Dear, as I chauffeured Her Royal Goutness to dottore on Friday morning, after taking the Durstons to the airport. Visited Marquis Wines, nearbye, while she was being poked and prodded. Picked up a Portuguese red, 2009 Portada, Vinho Regional Lisboa, 12%, a blend of Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon. Never had it before so looking forward to tasting it.

On Saturday I hosted our Book Club. We were discussing Conrad's Heart of Darkness and had decided that we would watch Apocalypse Now beforehand, as well as tack on a pot-luck dinner after film and then talk about book. Around 1:30pm I took a quick ride to see Imre. A friend had passed along an almost new cordless phone and I thought he might find it useful, particularly since he could carry it with him around the apartment, to the bathroom, etc., as it is increasingly difficult for him to move around without experiencing considerable pain. Anyway, we had a brief visit after I had changed phones. Couldn't stay long as gang were arriving at 3:00pm. Not much relative change in his condition but any physical exertion seems to really tire him out, walking back for nearest bus stop, etc.

Home in time for a quick shower and then Marcus Aurelius, Curly, Titanium Man, together with "female companion", Sarah, (new girlfriend), and Señor Kalashnikov were knocking on patio door for the 3:00pm screening in the Media Room at The Island Inn. Maggie acted as the usher, showing film goers to their seats, a flashlight tied to her tail! DVD included quite a few "takes" that never appeared in version any of us had seen when first released. That made viewing even more interesting, of course. Only aspect of this version that I didn't find as interesting/powerful or dramatic was the ending itself. In the "original", the assassination of Kurtz is juxtaposed with the sacrifice of a water buffaloe, back dropped against an inferno, shots of Kurtz's base exploding, The Doors blasting "This is the End". From Wikipedia, I discovered that there have been, to date, many variations of the end credit sequence. I hadn't known that. At any rate, it certainly was fascinating to re-visit both the film and the novella.

After the film, (almost an hour of additional footage), after Marlon had made his final exit, helped along by Jim Morrison, we broke for supper and enjoyed a veritable feast. Marcus Aurelius brought a wonderful Greek Salad, Mr K a delicious couscous salad, while Guy, for hs part, had said that he would contribute meatballs of lamb or chicken with a curry rub, to be BBQ'd in advance, or in situ at crime scene. As it turned out, he opted for pre-prepared chicken wings, ginger garlic meatballs and ginger beef morsels from a trusted deli counter! Nevertheless, all scrumptioso!!

Kerry and Whirlygig brought some amazing appetizers: Smoked salmon, (Under the guise of a new genetically modified tofu, crossed with the last living False Creek Sturgeon. The product is live
Tofish which must be ceremonially 'harvested' in your kitchen. A bit messy but Maggie can do the mop up!), on crackers with mayonnaise, capers and red onion, plus a selection of olives and dolmades, ingredients, according to Whirlissimo, "grown in sustainable green houses near the North Pole. All would benefit from marinating in single malt whiskey before eating." (I countered with, "My inclination is to pickle the eaters with malt, rather than marinate the olives and dolmades with same.)

Originally, I had planned to offer a combination of turkey/chicken/beef grilled sausages with roasted kartofellage, drizzled with fresh lemon juice to compliment aforementioned Saladin Grec, but realized, once other foodstuffs arrived that there was more than enough to tucker to feed everyone. Especially since Titanium Man Rice had made Rice Krispy Squares, loaded with marshmallows, and Curly, a large container of Persian Ice-Cream, for dessert. Non-discussion, (We often ramble on about everything other than the book in question. Has nothing to do with amount of malt consumed!), of The Heart of the Matter, (Please, no sticky marshmallow fingers on the library copies!), took place after Her Majesty had done the dishes!

Wonderful evening, film, food and company. Alas, my last Book Club until June as we don't return until end of May. Just returned from Fifthe Avenue Cinemas where we saw Tinker, Tailor Soldier Spy. Enjoyed it immensely, terrifically solid cast all around. Gary Oldman captured George Smiley's character rather nicely, at least we thought so. Didn't particularly like ending, only licence  taken with book, but otherwise it was a remarkable film adaptation. Go and see it. A picture is worth a thousand words, somebody said, I think! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Thank you so much for the update Pat and the pics. I do hope Corrinne is on the mend. Wow, not a great few days for her. That foot did look nasty as you said. And a cold on top of that...yikes. I think you should take her on a holiday...oh, you are, aren't you :-)

I've taken today off to study a bit and then I am volunteering at the First Half Half Marathon, that my running club runs every year. Have to spend several hours over this weekend doing that so needed some study time, hence am off today and Monday. Monday afternoon I'm off to Victoria for a couple workshops related to the exam, a 2 day conference and then the dreaded exam. Well, best get to it.

Penguin

PS My mom would have loved your bid!

Hi again, Penguin!

Trust Half Half marathon went well. Buona Fortuna with dreaded exam! Cheers, Il Conduttore

Thanks,Patrick, for the interesting letter [you do have an exciting life!!]
and for passing on the mesages. I hope Cora Lee's
foot is better. It sounds awful. I have been battling a full body itch!!!
'Can't figure what I am allergic to so I can sympathise.
Eva

Hi Eva!

Sorry to hear about your allergic reaction. Hope you are feeling better by now. I chauffeured Her Royal Goutness to dottore on Friday morning, after taking the Durstons to the airport and foot seems to be improving. rash is gradually going away. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Grogg and Lurch!

We stayed in a campground near a golf course near the center of Rotorua. As i recall, I ran around the perimeter. I could still jog in those days! Mick told me about your chance encounter! We quite enjoyed Napier and surrounding countryside. Some lovely wineries thereabouts. Bit of Art Deco to Napier, if I recall correctly. Enjoy the Pinots and Sauvignon Blancs. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Corinne and Il Conductore,

I owe both of you replies to e-mails about lots of great stuff like books, bridge and hooch....apologies but I started a new job and am working full time for the first time in a long time, so i'm getting used to the end of the life of leisure.  In the meantime I wanted to let you know that Covey's Dad passed away this past Monday, and they are having a Celebration of Life next Thurs. Feb. 16th at at Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Rd. From 2 - 4pm.  He would be turning 88 on the 16th, and as Cathy put it, he lived a long and good life and outlived many of his pals.  They decided on a celebration of life as they felt he would appreciate a party more than a somber service.

Aside from that, Corrine I hope you are back on 2 feet, and that all is well.  Let's catch up soon,

Karen/Legs

Hi Legs!

Thanks for letting us know about the death of Covey's Dad. I hope we'll both be able to make the Celebration of Life. On a more positive note, Congrats on gainful employment! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Movie, potluck, the book we never read... all this coming Saturday, 11th February, 2012.

Hello Lads!

Just a quick note to outline screening time, potluck menu:

To date, I have Marcus Aurelius, Curly, (Moe), Titanium Man, (with/without
female companion?), and Señor Kalashnikov for the 3:00pm screening of
Apocalypso Now in the Media Room at The Island Inn. Maggie will act as the
usher, showing film goers to their seats, a flashlight tied to her tail.

Dinner will be served after Marlon makes his final exit, helped along by Jim
Morrison. I expect that the first seating will be around 6:00pm since the
film has, I believe, a running time of 153 minutes. Marcus Aurelius will
bring a Greek Salad, Titanium Man Rice Krispy Squares, loaded with
marshmallows, for dessert. I plan to offer a combination of
turkey/chicken/beef grilled sausages with roasted kartofellage, drizzled
with fresh lemon juice to compliment aforementioned Saladin Grec. Mr K. will
bring "food to share", while Gunpowder Guy, for his part, implied, in an
earlier message, that he would "contribute and consume", in which measure
remains to be seen! Perhaps these two could further elucidate their menu
items so we have a better idea of what to expect. I assume Whirlygig and K
Squared will bring a sustainable tofu dish, (or vegan/vegetarian
equivalent), not made at the expense of any endangered bean plants or
Chilean Sea Bass.

Non-discussion of The Heart of the Matter will take place after Her Majesty
has done the dishes! Please, no sticky marshmallow fingers on the library
copies!

Let me know if this captures the essence of the NRBC multimedia
gathering/communal dinner and we'll plan accordingly.

Cheers, Il Conduttore/Filmvorführer! (Is this one of the official languages,
Sprache Polizei?)

KK & G will bring GF appies prepared with a new genetically modified tofu
crossed with the last living False Creek Sturgeon. The product is live
Tofish which must be ceremonially 'harvested' in your kitchen. A bit messy
but Maggie can do the mop up. We will also bring a selection of olives and
dolmades - ingredients grown in sustainable green houses near the North
Pole. All would benefit from marinating in single malt whisky before eating.

Hi everyone,

I will be there with Persian ice-cream and without my female companion. Cheers Moe

I am toying with the notion of bringing something like meatballs or chicken wings in a yet to be determined tasty sauce. As is my nature, I may not commit to the specific dish until the day of. But meatballs of lamb or chicken with a curry rub, to be BBQed in advance, or in situ at crime scene, seem to plausible choices. Guy

Hello again Lads!

Response is overwhelming! I'm more than impressed! Looks like it will be a taste-off between Persian ice-cream and Rice Krispy Squares, laced with Gooey Marshmallow, for dessert. My pedestrian sausages probably won't hold a candle to the Tantalizing Toymeister's meatballs of lamb or chicken with a curry rub, so I may have to insinuate a skewer into his back when he is busy at the BBQ. The genetically modified tofu crossed with the last living False Creek Sturgeon is sure to be a taste sensation if it doesn't give David Suzuki a heart attack! However, my inclination is to pickle the eaters with malt, rather than marinate the olives and dolmades with same. Now, all we need if for Mr Kalashnikov to arrive shortly before 3:00pm, (Misha, let me know if you need a parking space.), with Apocalypsis Now DVD in hand and we'll have the popcorn ready!

See everyone, with or without female companions, domani. Cheers, Il Conduttore, Titolare del Cinema Paradiso!

Hi All,
will be there shortly before 3pm sharp (as Il conduttore has suggested)
Will bring couscous salad.
Misha
ps: Patrick, thank you for the parking spot - will likely drive (just
checked the weather)

Hi Misha!

Just call when you are outside and I'll come to let you in. Couscous salad sounds delicious! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello!
how are you? We are fine. Here four photo taken in Nuevo Puerto Vallarta. Joe -Rose

Good to hear from you:

Thanks so much for the pictures. You both look very relaxed. We have had a quiet winter here in Vancouver but leave March 5 for a trip to Hong Kong, Australia and Japan.
I had 3 toes straightened and pinned before Christmas so have spent most of my time sitting and reading. Finally started walking on the foot 2 weeks ago. Patrick is busy swimming and riding his bike with friends. My parents are here for the winter but just left today on a cruise with my brother and his wife leaving from Florida. They will be gone for 2 weeks. The snowdrops are coming up a sure sign of Spring. Hope to see you this summer, Best Corinne

Hi Rose and Joe!

Really enjoyed your pictures! Be curious to know all about yourt stay in PV when next we see each other. I do hope, as Corinne has mentioned, that we can connect sometime this summer.

Although she mentioned her foot surgery, she didn't say anything about her allergic reaction. She had a physio session a week ago this past Saturday and her foot started to itch on Sunday evening. By Monday morning it was puffy and covered with an alarming rash. I took her to Mount St Joseph's where her surgeon saw her and prescribed some cortisone cream. He didn't think it was infected so that was some relief. Just an allergic reaction to the oil/lotion physio had used, we think! (Have attached some snaps of desserts which were served at the end of the afternoon. I "stole" a couple of dollops of whipped cream and added it to my black coffee to fashion a quasi-latte!)

Cora Lee felt even worse on Tuesday morning so our GP's receptionist was able to squeeze her in just before 10:00am. Her Royal Majesty is now on steroids and her foot seems to be responding, if slowly. Rash is not as itchy or as raised. Still worrying and uncomfortable, needless to say.

Rick Welch

I believe many of you knew Rick, so I've forwarded this Library message to our email list. Nadine

It with great sadness that I am writing to inform you that former library staff member, Rick Welch, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2012.
Over the course of his long career at UBC Library, and up until his retirement in March of 2011, Rick held a number of positions and performed a number of roles in Technical Services, a few of which were: reviser of bibliographic records, coordinator of pre-order searching, retrospective conversion supervisor, trainer of branch ordering assistants, and (most recently) administrative assistant to the Head of Technical Services. His conscientiousness and considerable computer expertise were admired by all in the Division.  But Rick was so much more than the sum of his positions and his technical skills.  He was a dedicated friend and constant personal support to all around him.  He always had time to lend a hand to a colleague, and touched many with his kind heart and selflessness.

Family and friends will gather to remember Rick on March 25th at 2pm at Van Dusen Botanical Garden.  In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the BC Cancer Foundation, Lung Cancer Research would be appreciated. Ingrid Parent University Librarian

I was downstairs playing bridge with Sarge, Kid Chelene and Mr Fixit and discovered, upon returning, that Chloe and Nana had had a tiff after Ms Goutness finished off a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc all by her lonesome!!! They were to watch Moneyball but that fell through once the Goils had at each other. Nana wouldn't do her burgeoning pile of laundry and became snippy when reminded of build-up! Her Majesty certainly does not like the servants to have views of their own!
