IIDD, September 19th

With all the angst involved in choosing a dram of Bruichladdich (from the
100 or so varietals) there has been some back and forth on choosing the book
to follow the Billionaire's Vinegar. I think Pat's final choice is Panicking
Ralph, an early work by Bill James in his Harpur & Iles series. Reading
Lolita is required reading and is expected to be unread before the lease
expires on the Island Inn in 2040.

P,

9AM at the Heartbreak Garage works for me.

We will have to harass Mark -- no word on that commitment yet although I did
not call him last night.

W

P,

Thanks for the ride today – it was a good one.

As discussed, let me know if this date works for you and Corinne.

Hi Whirlage!

Yes, terrific jaunt across four municipalities. With a bit of dipsy-doodling around Kits Point and down Lamey's Mill Road to Monk McQueen's, managed to up odometre to 71.33K!

As far as Cora Lee's schedule is concerned, October 8th is fine. (Is it significant that this is Yom Kippur? Must we atone for overbidding?) I don't have my VIFF volunteer schedule yet so I'm hoping there will not be a conflict. Coordinator was supposed to have shifts posted a week ago so I'm not sure what is going on. I have an orientation meeting on the 28th of this month but I hope to know when I'm expected to show up before then. I'd say that you should plan on the 8th. Obviously, I'll let you know as soon as I am told about shift dates.

Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Hello Patrick!

Was wondering if you were planning on another distribution run sometime this
week. If you are, great! Just let me know when I might expect you....

Sandra

Hi Sandra:

Cora Lee and I were planning to do another run tomorrow as a couple of the places are closed on Monday. Not quite sure, at this point, if we will be doing a morning or afternoon delivery. Either should work, I assume.

Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Sarah Polley!

How is your knee? Terrific birthday movie!

Will you be screening your latest at The VIFF? Unfortunately, I don't have my VIFF volunteer schedule yet. Coordinator was supposed to have shifts posted a week ago so I'm not sure what is going on. I have an orientation meeting on the 28th of this month but I hope to know when I'm expected to show up before then.

Had a grand evening with Lads from Book Club on Saturday night. New member, Dave Iverson, is very interesting. He's a computer forensics professional and a cyclist. His bike is worth a mere $5,000. He lives in North Van and cycles with a club there. A typical ride, on weekend, is to Golden Ears and back, 160K, in five hours or so! (Talk about paltry!) He also belongs to a Masters Swim Club, (in the pool at 5:30am before work), and is training for a half-marathon in a month or so! Nonetheless, a very pleasant, friendly chap. He reads on his Sea Bus commute so one of reasons he wanted to join our group.

On Friday, Raymundo and I met Whirlygig at 15th and Crown where he had dropped Tia, (his girlfriend's daughter), off at school. We proceeded out 16th to MD and then to Iona Beach. Wind was pretty strong on return loop but slackened once we made CSTB. Up Heather and then home via Ray's place to log 61.33K. Just a short ride out to UBC on Saturday as I had a number of errands to do. It was pretty wet until about 1:00pm. Visited with my friend Imre, (he is battling multiple myeloma), and am pleased to say he seems to be doing not badly, again, given his situation. Invited him to lunch on Sunday but he was planning to drop in at a friend's insurance business on Broadway, a few blocks from Young Brothers, I believe. Apparently, a celebration of fifty years of doing business in that location. Truly glad that he is feeling well enough to make such outings. We'll have him later in week, depending on how he feels, of course.

Rode out to UBC about 4:00pm yesterday. Had planned to "attack" the Foreshore Hill five times as I haven't done many "repeats" of late and miss them in a perverse, masochistic way! Did just that and with a few dipsy-doodles had 61.33K on clock by the time I was home.

Enjoyed a terrific jaunt across four municipalities this morning. Whirlygig and Raymundo showed up at our place at 9:00am and we set off along Seawall to connect with Adanac, not far from Science World. Took that route all the way to Burnaby where name changes to something else, Burnaby Mountain Urban Route, I think, to skirt the bottom of Burnaby Mountain. Not far from Production Way we crossed Lougheed Highway and eventually, (Had to dismount to climb some steps on a lovely wooded trail running parallel to #1), found our way to North Road to New Westminster. North Road wasn't a difficult grade but Sapperton Hill was very taxing, to say the least! Runs through Fraserview neighbourhood, I gather. At any rate we made for Sky Train station at 22nd Ave and then over the north arm of the Fraser River on the Queensborough Bridge with its wonderful bike path to land in Richmond at the east end of Lulu Island.

Made our way along Boyd Street/Westminster Highway to turn off onto River Road, enjoying the huge log booms and the odd working tug. Giorgio honked his horn at two gorgeous white swans who seemed rather annoyed that we seemed to think they were Canada Geese! On to #6 Road for a bit and then Vulcan Way, under the Knight Street Bridge, until it intersects with #5 Road. Here we turned towards the waer and reconnected with River Road to take the Cambie Sky Train Bridge back over the Fraser. Up Heather and then west along 37th to meander to Ray's place near 23rd and Arbutus. Waved goodbye to him and then dropped Whirlygig off at 2nd/Macdonald and made my own way home. With a bit of dipsy-doodling around Kits Point and down Lamey's Mill Road to Monk McQueen's, on Stamps Landing, and back, managed to up odometre to 71.33K! Pleased as punch, particularly with discovering/exploring a new, fairly arduous loop. Think it would probably be best suited for a weekend ride as not so much truck traffic then, on some of the busy roads one cannot avoid taking.

Cheers, Patrizio!

I presume it's for Dawn of the Dead rather than Away from Her. (I sure wish I looked like her though) or maybe I'm way off base and It's because Dana is showing her thoughts through facial expression alone.
My doctor said that it was a severe bruise but should take just a few weeks to heal. Thank god I don't have osteoporosis as that was quite a drop off the curb..
That was good news about your friend feeling better.
Did you happen to hear an interview with anna Marie Tremonti on Radio One this morning?
It was called Motherhood Interrupted and dealt with the experiences a 67 year old had when she was pregnant in 1964 and dealing with Social Services. I'd love to get a transcript of the program because aside from her having a drunken stepfather our stories were practically identical. Somehow I felt vindicated listening to it because when I tell my story I often feel that people believe I'm exaggerating when in fact I feel I'm actually minimizing the story. The radio show even had Wally in tears.
Anyway..

Hi again, Sarah!

Glad to hear that you are on the mend! No, unfortunately, I was probably huffing and puffing somewhere in Burnaby or New West! While traveling back from Falcon we caught her series on Game Changers. It was superb and simply fascinating. I'm sure Motherhood Interrupted was as riveting, if painful. Hard to believe that The Scarlet Letter is only a few decades ago!!!

Not sure if I sent along my description of Next to Normal. If so, I do apologize. Bit of the same emotional roller -coaster for Cora Lee and Flamin'. At any rate, difficult memories but better confronted and understood than repressed. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Lads!

Came across this site:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?address=8970+River+Road&city=Delta&state=BC&zipcode=V4G+1B5&country=CA

when I was trying to piece together our route from Lougheed. Thought you might enjoy a the "swan's eye view"! Gives one an idea of how North Road and Cariboo fit together, and how we made it to Queensborough Bridge, (along 8th, I think), etc. Cheers, Patrizio!

This is a riot. There is a contact I can send this to, however believe it or
not, tooooo racy for our newsletter. It would probably offend a few of our
old farts. Thanks for thinking of us.

BTW, didn't get any right!

Hi again, Carlos!

Hi again, Carlos!

You are just being modest! I'm sure you scored 100%!

Cheers, Patrizio!

There are so many sad stories ...http://www.cbc.ca/thecurrent/episode/2011/09/19/motherhood-interrupted

Hi Brenda Louise!

Thanks for the link. Will peruse domani as we are going to watch a DVD shortly. Down by Law, by Jim Jarmusch, features Tom Waits, and Roberto Benigni in a Louisiana prison! Whirlygig brought it by after we were talking about Roberto, at one point, during our Book Club last Saturday.

Just came back from a very pleasant walk around Granville Island. Quiet and not even the whisper of a breeze. Enjoyed seeing some late evening tennis lessons at False Creek Community Centre courts and watching late night diners through the windows of various bars and restaurants as well as a few Emily Carr students shooting a media assignment  outside the main building. Quite a marked difference from the busy market and shops still filled with cruise ship and other tourists.

Buona Fortuna with your knee rehab! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!
