Hello, Patrick,

How are you doing? How was your trip?

I'm in Stockholm again, for three months or so, just recovering after a pretty adventurous return trip.

Knowing you trust my expertise in the field, I have a wine recommendation for you: Appassimento 2009, produced by Tommasi in Verona. I assume you know everything about the appassimento method. Most full-bodied red I have had in many years. Price: SEK 89, equivalent to Canadian $ 13. In Sweden that is considered to be "medium-priced", most of the wines ranging from Canadian $ 8 to 10. I suppose you will have to add at least 30% to arrive at the Canadian retail price, if it is at all available.

Cheers, Kjell

Hello Kjell:

Had a simply wonderful time in Winnipeg/Falcon Lake, thanks. Had a wonderful evening, following week, on Thursday, with Flamin' and Sarge. Enjoyed a Corvina 2008 Ripa Magna, Verona, 14%. Had latter in Falcon Lake when Stuart, Cora Lee's cousin, came to lunch. Was so impressed with the wine that I copied down the details and was able to find it in Winnipeg on our way home. Only $18, a remarkable price for such a voluptuous Italian red. Doubly, doubly interesting, in light of your wine tip, regarding the Tommasi, Appassimento 2009, from Verona as well! Price you estimate seems pretty accurate, at least as far as Manitoba listings indicate. In fact, I found the wine selection there far more interesting and reasonably priced than in Alberta. Malt, however, is still cheaper in the latter province.

I had first come across appassimento wines as dessert wines, so-called Vin Santo, straw wines, since they are most often produced, traditionally, (I didn't know this at the time.), by drying the freshly harvested grapes on straw mats, when tasting near Paso Robles in the late '80's. I believe Amarone is also made from the partially dried grapes of Corvina. In general, I'm not as fond of many Italian reds, (produced in Italy, as opposed to New World expressions of many of their well-know varietals, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, per esempio, that is), as I find, at least in the price range I can afford, that they are often too thin and acidic for my liking. At any rate, an exciting discovery so thanks for the wonderful tip! I shall seek out the Tommasi forthwith!

Hi Patrice,

Hope all is well with you. Kind of suprised to not have heard anything from the island inn in quite a while. I couldn't help but be a bit paranoid and think perhaps I was in your bad books for not having called you about a bike ride!!. Well with the end of summer upon us and the return of the nice weather and as a person who keeps his word, I thought I'd see if you were up for a ride tomorrow. I have been training to try and keep up with you ! and have been biking around deer lake or down to the river and back 2 or 3 times a week of late. Drop me a line and let me know what you're up too.

Hi Big Al!

Sorry I've not been in touch, although I had been planning to give you a shout. Not sure if you knew we'd been away.
Whirlygig and I are up for a ride tomorrow so we need to know what you'd like to do. There are a number of options, ranging from meeting somewhere in East Van to coming to your neck of the woods. Let me know the sort of distance/incline you are ready to "attack" and we'll plan accordingly!

Cheer, Patrizio!

Greetings from Nanoose!
We'll be over next Monday-let's aim for dinner & a visit.

Can either do a little pot luck or go out somewhere.
Let us know if it works.
Cheers!

Hi Grogg and Lurch:

Cora Lee and Flamin' have their Book Club on Monday, at 7:30pm. It will be held at Agneta's. She lives a few blocks from Denman, on Nelson. Not sure what your schedule entails but if you are available for an early supper, say 5:30pm, or thereabouts, we could meet somewhere in the vicinity and have a meal before the Goils would need to leave. Let us know and we'll plan accordingly. Cheers, Patrizio!

P,

I keep forgetting to tell you that Ralf has resigned – meant to tell the group last Saturday. The reason he gave was that it was not his thing. Too bad but c`est la vie.

This is the first formal resignation and I appreciate the notice. Former members have just lapsed, were expected to attend and stayed on the e-mail notices for forever…

I hope Ray will take the spot -- I really think he would enjoy it.

W

Hi Whirlissimo!

Too, too bad about Ralf leaving. Especially since he actually read books!

Any word from Captain Barnacle II?

Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Thanks for the maps and directions, gentlemen. Enjoyed today's ride. Should
sleep well tonight.

Ray

Avast there, maties!
I can administer punishment if you feel the need, but I'm new at this cycling thing - I spent my summer in nautical pursuits. Is pulling you up the hill the urban equivalent to keel-hauling? Could I drag you up with my 4-Runner? Or perhaps a cat (that o-9-tails) would suffice to prod your scurvy asses up said hill? Please let me know your preferences so I can arrange the appropriate equipment.

regards,
BB, ABS

Hi Captain Barnacle II and Land Lubbers!

Whirlygig and I are up for a ride tomorrow so we need to know what others would like to do. There are a number of options, ranging from meeting somewhere in East Van to coming to your neck of the woods. Let us know the sort of distance/incline you are ready to "attack" and we'll plan accordingly! Seymour anyone?

Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Hi Ray!

Just talked to Whirlygig and Mark is up for a ride tomorrow as well. That being the case, Giorgio suggested we meet him on Cassiar at 9:30am and proceed to Seymour! That being the case, we should leave my place no later than 8:45pm. I trust this is fine with you. Wanted to let you know so you could plan accordingly, if need be, before calling tomorrow around 8:00am. Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Patrick, how are you? Thanks for the update. Are you back home? Hope all's well. Harvest has just started here! Another growing cycle is coming to an end and a new vintage of wine will begin!
Take care, Pat

Hi Pat and David!

Buona Fortuna with Harvest!!! (I'm sure you'll be far too, too busy to respond for some time, let alone read this latest missive!!!) Nevertheless...
