IIDD, Nov 13th

Hello Jim!

I'm Patrick Dunn, friend of Ray Banks. He passed along your email address some time ago. My wife and I will fly to Hong Kong on March 5th, 2012, arriving on the 6th, at 7:05pm. We have booked into the YMCA Salisbury Hotel, 41 Salisbury Road, Kowloon, until the 10th. Just wondering if you think that is a good place to stay, relative to cost, sightseeing, etc. We are paying about $136CDN per night so think that is a fairly decent price but really have no idea about hotel rates in HK. There is a free cancellation policy so if you can suggest, whenever you have a moment, something better, in terms of price and/or location, that would be much appreciated.
Anyway, I trust this message finds you well and look forward to hearing from you when convenient. All the best. Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Jim!

Thanks so much for the very speedy reply! Much appreciated. After you sent along suggestion for the
Central Park Hotel in Soho on Hollywood Rd., I did a bit of comparison between the YMCA and the Cosmopolitan Hotel, 387-397 Queen's Road East, Hong Kong, as latter seemed about the same price range, as other two, although I gather it is in a different part of city. Given free cancellation and five nights, YMCA is $600, Cosmopolitan $707 and Central Park $803, all in $CDN. Without flexibility of cancellation, last two would be about $50-100 less, if my figures are correct.

You mention that the Central Hotel is in a much better location so am just wondering just what that means. Ease of getting around? Safer? Furthermore, most hotels seem to offer a limo service ($84 is one price quoted), and I'd be curious to know if one can take a bus and/or subway from airport, without inordinate difficulty, to most hotels that we might choose.

While we certainly wish to be comfortable, we don't plan to spend much of our time at the hotel so prefer to have cheaper accommodation if location is otherwise acceptable, given local standards/conditions. Would rather spend money on sightseeing, food and entertainment.

Sorry to pester you with such questions/details but unless you think there is a significant reason, given what I've noted above, to move from the Y, we will probably stay there.

As you mention you may well be in town when we are there, certainly do hope we will be able to connect. Again, thanks very much for your time and effort. Cheers, Patrizio!

Hello Lads!

Anyone interested in a ride tomorrow. Forecast looks promising. I suggest a jaunt to Deep Cove but I'm open to other suggestions. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Hi Ray!

Really pleased you were able to join us. Chloë won't let me near soup! Thanks very much for that.

No reply from others yet so will let you know as responses come in. Cheers, Patrizio!

Patriçio,

Forecast is rain, and I am under the weather with some esoteric bug.  Mornings are even worst than usual.  If the weather picks up, a shorter ride in the aft is possible.

Hi Ragin'!

Raymundo would like to go after 1:30-2:00pm so unless I go earlier, perhaps we can stitch something together! Cheers, Patrizio!
Pat,

Would love to ride this morning but cannot join you. Maybe monday or Tuesday in wetsuits? Enjoy. W
Hi Whurlygig! (Notice new spelling!!!)

Bit of excitement at Tonsillectomy Towers this morning at just after 5:00am! Are you interested in Deep Cove domani? Cheers, Patrizio Poirot!!
Sorry, but I'll have to pass as well.

8^) cheers, Mark
Hi Marcus Aurelius!

I'm finished with book so if you'd like it until Tuesday feel free to pop by and collect it! Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Pat,
Thanks for the offer, but I have a volleyball practice to coach at 3:00 p.m today. 8^) cheers, Mark

Partizio,
Thanks for the Grogg meister's email!
We'll get together over Xmas for sure.
Did you happen to try the Argentine reds from Tikal (available at
Marquis)? -great juice!
Take care, Bill.

ps I thought you were retired from UBC!?
Hi Wild Bill!

I took early retirement from UBC in 2004 but one of perks is free email!

Thanks for tip on Tikal. Haven't tried any of their product here but I think we may well have come across something by the winery in either Manitoba or Alberta. Perhaps even in Argentina when we were there in 2009. Keep in touch. Cheers, Patrizio!
Hi Patricioso, enjoying a glass of chhhaaardy after a long day painting, gap filling, wood collecting, shelf building and mucking around on the tractor. Don' know where the time goes. Read a piece in NYRB on William James before snooze. Didn' know he was Henry's bro.I saw a great doco on Mallory about 2 years ago - isit the same?Hope the joints are better. House painting has taken its toll on mine, nothing that drugs can't fix.Really looking to see you.Tks for Greg's address. Love y'all. SPS: Loved the pics of gradually declining Cora - made a good series.Drl. y
Hi Stefano!

Glad to hear that you still know how to relax! All work and no play makes Jack/Stefano a dull boy! Loved your characterization of a "gradually declining Cora Lee!" Unfortunately, it happens/is happening to all of us! More reason for more Chhhhhaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrddddddooooonnnnnnnaaaaaayy!

William James was, as you obviously now know, was, among other things, an extremely important psychologist. First came across him via some of my literary criticism courses. Not familiar with documentary on Mallory but assume it is probably same individual. Will start book as soon as I've finished Fukuyama's The Origins of  Political Order, a remarkable, fascinating work. Extremely well written but requires close reading. Have to finish it in next few weeks as I've borrowed it from a Book Club chum and he has another friend waiting in line.

Bit of excitement this morning at just after 5:00am! Chloë came into our bedroom, croaking, (all she manage with her raw throat), that she needed to go to Emergency. She had woken up but a few minutes earlier, swallowing blood. Cora Lee threw on some clothes and drove her to St. Paul's and phoned a a few minutes after they made it to hospital to say that she had been "Fast-Tracked"!

Only one happy about commotion was Maggie as she thought she could cadge an early breakfast! I told her to go back top sleep and spent about fifteen minutes cleaning up the sink in guest bathroom, filled with blood soaked Kleenex. Felt like Ian Rankin's Rebus or Peter Temple's Cashin, (never a CSI technician), on a murder investigation!

Goils were back by 7:30am, just as Cora Lee's alarm went off. (She is to be picked up by Robyn at 9:00am, so had hoped to sleep-in, longer than 5:00am anyway!) I was sending messages and Maggie came flying into bedroom, hoping it really was feeding time by now. Coriandre informed me that although "Fast-Tracked", Chloë was only seen by a medical student. Apparently there had just been a very nasty high speed crash all the personnel were needed for the surviving victims. Attending doctor apologized but said they would hear about it on the news. At any rate, according to literature Chloë brought back home after undergoing tonsillectomy, the scabs from the wound begin to fall off five or six days after surgery so Cora Lee's opinion, and that of med student, was that there was nothing unusual to worry about. All in all, much sound and fury as she didn't receive more than a few prods and pokes. Still, better safe than sorry. Chloë was more than happy to go back to bed. Maggie was already curled up on blanket at foot of her bed, fast asleep, tummy full, without a thought for her favourite Canadian Patient!

Hoping to go for a ride later today. Rain is supposed to clear up. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!
Hi Patrice,

Sorry to have been incommunicato the last couple of days but I've been hair
straight back! what little I have left that is.
I was up the sunshine coast yesterday as Jake had a soccer game in Sechelt.
I had to pick up a bunch of kids and get the 11:20 ferry to Langdale and got
to the field at around 1:00. We were short 3 players who we had seen on the
ferry and eventually heard from them partway into the game. We were quite a
way from the center of Sechelt but I arranged to go back there, find them
and them lead them back to the game. I pulled up just in time to Jake get
pushed down by another kid with the Ref. standing within sight yet he made
no call, This after he lectured the kids that no one should be putting their
hands on another player, that there was no excuse for this!. As it turned
out the kid had already pushed one of our other players down as well with no
call and when he pushed Jake he also stepped on his foot at the same time. I
was furious and wanted to grab the little punk by the scruff and push him
down! aggravated by the fact that we were down 1 - 0 already surely due in
part to the fact that we had no Subs because the parents didn't have it
together enough to have the directions printed off and make it to the field.

We wound up losing 2 - 1 but the kids played well but were still kind of
dis- heartened as we've only had one win this season . It's been a really
tough go since the coach quit two games into the season and we dads have
been trying collectively to keep it going. We pulled in at home at 6:15 and
immediately went out with our friends Chris and Lubna for dinner and some
drinks at Romers burger bar down at the foot of Kent . We had a great time
it's a fun atmosphere, great food.

I'm humming and Hawing about a ride today, I'd like to go but I have a lot
of things to do especially as I was away all day yesterday. Colleen's not up
yet but I'm going to go talk to her and see what her plans are for the day.
I'll get back to you soon.
Hi Joe Btfsplk!

Although you are the "world's most loving friend...[you are]...the worst jinx who always travels with a dark cloud over his head!"

I just sent a message to Sarge as he wants me to collect him from Olympic Village this evening. He has been in Penticton all weekend at a Skate Canada competition. I was still laughing when I told him about the Incident at Iona, soon to be a major motion picture!

"I just talked to Big Al a few minutes ago as I'm trying to stitch together a ride, later this afternoon when rain is supposed to clear up. In course of conversation he told me what happened after we left them at Macdonald Beach, on Thursday.

'Given rain shrouded days we have been experiencing, of late, more than pleased to learn that forecast for this past Thursday was going to be precipitation free. This being the case, we decided to cobble together a group ride. I suggested that we meet at the foot of the Cambie Sky Train Bridge, just off Kent, and make our way to Iona and then Steveston. Whether Burnaboids would cycle to rendezvous point, or not, was left to their own collective wisdom. Given that MD is usually not all that pleasant to ride along, during the week, what with all the trucks, etc., rest of us agreed to use Cypress, meeting at sub-station just off Arbutus/King Ed at 10:00am. Was not sure about frost, hence later starting/meeting times for this junket.

Marcus Aurelius and Big Molly did ride all the way from Burnaby and made CSTB with one minute to spare, and we set off for Iona. Ironically, it was warmer than some of the days we had experienced in June, of all things, and we sped along, towards Iona, reveling in almost unbelievable fall day, north shore mountain peaks dusted with a light sprinkling of snow. Lads took a break for water and light snacks while Robo Ray and I circled. Put on an extra 2K before laggards were ready to move on. As it turned out, Big Molly had arranged to meet a friend at Macdonald Beach, about half-way to Iona, where chap was walking his dog. He had a pick-up and was planning to return some welding equipment he'd borrowed from Big Al. Marcus Aurelius decided to return to Burnaby with them, unwilling to contemplate the Steveston segment of planned ride. Nevertheless, great to have the two along for part of ride. As we waved goodbye, hoped they would make it back to Burnaby without incident. Pick-up looked as if it had had a number of run-ins with stanchions of one sort or another, over the years!!!'

"Truer words were never thought or spoken as I learned today! When Big Al met his friend, he had two dogs instead of one and one of them didn't like bikes so wouldn't stop barking. He and Marcus decided that they'd rather ride back to Burnaby than put up with incessant yapping so they said goodbye and made their way towards CSTB. Shortly after they turned off road leading to Macdonald Beach Marcus' rear tire started to look as if it was going flat. They stopped and Big Al took out his pump and proceeded to inflate tire. A few seconds into enterprise, the valve snapped off at the tire rim and then the tire really went flat! They really had had no other viable option but to call friend and make their way home with him.

As mentioned above, truck looked pretty rough on the outside and inside of cargo bed wasn't much better, I gather. They had to move a whole pile of junk from there to be able to put dogs in front of cargo bed, with leashes through small window, to prevent them from leaping to their deaths. (Further gather that Marcus and Big Molly would have been happy to let this happen by time they were home!)
Three crunched together in cab, dogs yowling behind, Big Al having to shift, in confined space, for his friend, as gear-stick was some home-made monstrosity, about two feet long! In closing told Big Al that nobody would want to ride with him anymore as he seems to attract nothing but bad luck!"

On our home front, bit of excitement this morning at just after 5:00am! Chloë came into our bedroom, croaking, (all she manage with her raw throat), that she needed to go to Emergency. She had woken up but a few minutes earlier, swallowing copious amounts of blood. Cora Lee threw on some clothes and drove her to St. Paul's and phoned a a few minutes after they made it to hospital to say that Chloë had been "Fast-Tracked"! Only one happy about commotion was Maggie as she thought she could cadge an early breakfast! I told her to go back to sleep and spent about fifteen minutes cleaning up the sink in guest bathroom, filled with blood soaked Kleenex. Felt like Ian Rankin's Rebus or Peter Temple's Cashin, (never a CSI technician), on a murder investigation! (Could this be part of Incident at Iona. Do either you or Marcus do away with your friend or his dog or both? Techs would be puzzling over mixture of human and canine blood! Devious my Dear Watson! Devious indeed!)

Goils were back by 7:30am, just as Cora Lee's alarm went off. (She was to be picked up by Robyn at 9:00am, so had hoped to sleep-in, longer than 5:00am anyway!) I was sending messages and Maggie came flying into bedroom, hoping it really was feeding time by now. Coriandre informed me that although "Fast-Tracked", Chloë was only seen by a medical student. Will be in touch regarding foray to Deep Cove domani! Cheers, Patrizio!

Hi Sarge!

Give me a shout and I'll come by, on my bike. I'm supposed to take Molly for a walk so I'll have her ride your bike and I'll put her in one of my panniers on way home. I'll bring a bungie cord and you can pull your suitcase behind bike! Don't laugh! I just talked to Big Al a few minutes ago as I'm trying to stitch together a ride, later this afternoon when rain is supposed to clear up. In course of conversation he told me what happened after we left them at Macdonald Beach, on Thursday.

See you at Olympic Village around 6:30pm or shortly after you call. Cheers, Patrizio!

Thanks. Wayne
Hi Patrick and Corinne,

Sounds like Chloe has had a tonsillectomy? Yes you are right they don’t like
doing that operation on adults. Hopefully by now she is on the mend.

Do I remember that Corinne had her bunions operated on a few years back? Is
this operation a recurrence of the bunions?

Life here is busy, busy. In preparation for my retiring from the Girl Guides
I have taken on a small business which is selling by demonstration a new
kitchen appliance called a Thermomix, it is a little miracle in the kitchen,
measuring, grinding, chopping, sautéing, slow cooking, steaming etc. All
very quickly and with little washing up, as it uses only one bowl!

I have been to two Xmas pageants already, one with the guides (local
council) and yesterday the big formal arrival of Father Christmas to
Adelaide. We actually broke the Guinness world record of 19,000 people
wearing red noses at one time, we counted over 30,000!

I went to a spectacular cooking demo with a local Bush Foods chef, wattle
seed sorbet, lemon thyme infused pearl barley risotto, prawns marinated in
strawberry gum sauce, amazing foods!

Have just returned from a house warming of a friend of ours who has a
converted tram on the beach at Balgowan, Yorke Peninsular, they have added
onto to it a new bedroom, bathroom, family room and deck, Trevor did a lot
of the tiling of the wet areas. It is on a magnificent piece of beach with
absolute beach frontage.

Did we tell you that on our caravan trip in June/July that all 4 bikes were
trashed one way or the other as a consequence of using dodgy bike carriers
on the back of the caravans?
Anyway, we were covered by insurance and I now have a very smick new Apollo,
hybrid bike. I decided to buy a boys bike as it is easier to load onto the
back of the Cruiser on the "proper" bike carrier. I have put a few K's on
the clock riding back and forth to my gym.

I have just finished reading a fabulous book called 'The Island" by Victoria
Hislop. Fascinating story about a leper colony, Spinalonga, off the island
of Crete.

Our theatre subscription has now finished for this year and so has the ASO,
except for a Christmas concert of the Police Band at the Adelaide Town Hall,
we have no cultural activities planned for the end of the year.
The plays have been thought provoking and entertaining and the ASO
performances have ranged from classical to Star Wars!

By the way, do you realise that the month of March is the Festivals month?
We will have to look at the programme once you have finalised the dates and
go to some of the shows?

Warm regards Tina and Trevor

Hi Teens and Trev!

Yes, Chloë did have a tonsillectomy! Yes, Cora Lee did have surgery for a bunion a number of years ago. Now, first three toes are "wandering" so need to be re-aligned!

Flamin' is in Newfoundland attending Ryan's induction into NFLD Sports Hall of Fame for his figure skating achievements!

Congrats on Xmas pageants and breaking Guinness World Record! Sorry to hear about your bikes! Was Big Al along on that trip? Festivals month sounds like fun. Is the programme online? We could take a look, if so, and see what might be of interest. Any picnics in the park sort of outings? Great snaps of your Goils!

Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio!

Hello Dearest Host Daughter!

Did I tell you that Chloë had a tonsillectomy last Monday! Cora Lee left for Victoria, on time, in spite of all the commotion, with Robyn, to take in an opera production there. I'll be all alone with Maggie and Chloë! All the best from Coriandre, Chloë and Maggie to you, Dearest Host Daughter! Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizio, Your Cruel Host Father!!!!

Hello Cruel Swiss!

Trust all goes well with our dear friends and former Host Children! Would dearly love to have some or all of you return to Vancouver but please wait until until after the end of May, 2012, at the earliest! Busy times, currently and ahead, with all sorts of things, some medical, some travel related.
[Was prompted to send this email as I had a message from Ting, in response to one from me. Mad Max and Super Simon will know him, of course. He sent along snap taken when Sabine and Simon saw him in Hong Kong a few months ago, I believe!] Fondestos and Cheers to everyone, Patrizio!
