IIDD, October 10th

Zen is not a particular state but the normal state: silent, peaceful, unagitated. In Zazen neither intention, analysis, specific effort nor imagination take place. It's enough just to be without hypocrisy, dogmatism, arrogance -- embracing all opposites. -Taisen Deshimaru, Zen teacher (1914-1982)

Hi Patrick and Corinne,

Just a reminder to let us know if you are planning to leave the province/country between now and your trip in March. Then we will provide the best rated quote for another annual policy.

Call Susan if you have any questions.

Thanks, Charlie

Hi Champagne!

Thanks for mentioning medical coverage but we don't plan to go anywhere until our March trip. That being the case, I suppose we will need coverage for another year. We'll look at current policy and let you know what we'd like to do. However, I imagine it will be much the same procedure as in past applications.

Enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with Nancy and David yesterday, along with family friend Laura. Went downstairs for drinks an hors d'oeuvres, at about 5:30pm, with Clan Sutherland. They had a large gang so we had decided, beforehand, to have separate meals. Great visit with friends Carmen Miranda and Southside Johnny, (they moved from northside of False Creek to Surrey, about a year ago), as well as Bella and Bert, (Marvin's parents), Aaron and Akiko, (Wayne's nephew and girlfriend), and Noelle, close school friend of Nicole's, now living and working in Kelowna, before coming back upstairs for our meal.

Had done turkey in a cooker Cora Lee bought a number of years ago, and it was deliciously moist. Heaps of garlic mashed, pumpkin squash, Brussels sprouts with bacon, two dressings, (Chloë's vegetarian/corn bread and Cora Lee's minced pork), with cherry tomatoe/bocconcini salad so it was a plenteous feast indeed. Copious quantities of white wine and red so never an empty glass for toasts!

Given that there were only six of us at the table we had a chance to really visit with everyone. After lingering over second helpings we cleared table and repaired to living room to continue chatting and sipping. About 8:00pm, Downstairs Mob came for dessert. Coriandre had baked three pumpkin pies and Nancy had brought along a stupendously tasty carrot cake with simply killer icing. We had two dessert wines, both Elephant Island, Naramata, a crab apple and a framboise, that were almost dessert, in and of themselves! Of course, we needed a few snorts of malt, Aberlour a'bunadh, 60.2%, and a new acquisition, a Tullibardine, Banyuls Finnish, (Whatever that is! I just looked it up: ...a red wine finish, whiskey is matured in casks from the Coume del Mas in the Rousillon region of southern France, and previously housed Galeteo Banyuls.), but an "anaemic" 46%!

Newest member to Clan Sutherland's extended is a nine week old Bichon! Noelle brought pup down from the Okanagan where there is a breeder. Nicoel and Marvin had presented him to Bella for her 58th birthday. Name has not yet been decided upon. Chloë and I favour "Snowy', after Tintin's pooch, but Nicole seems set on Jake. Nevertheless, a darling puppy. Poor Molly, however, is suffering from First Child Syndrome when Mom and Dad come home from the hospital with a new baby brother! Maggie was not amused either! Anyway, a lovely, lovely evening, for the human crowd, at least!

Had a glorious sleep-in this morning and then spent a few hours on kitchen clean-up. Cora Lee is busy making turkey pies as I scribe and I will join her in kitchen shortly to make a cabbage/Japanes noodle salad for tonight's dinner. Are having Zoë and Matt, (daughter/husband of close friends from Melbouren, Kathleen and Steve), this evening as they were at her grandmother's yesterday. Hope that Andre, friend we stayed with in France, last September, will join us as well. He is in town to see his mother and his cardiologist as he suffered some fairly serious heart trouble last January/February. He has a busy social schedule while in Vancouver so whether he turns up or not remains to be seen.

Time to vacuum and then put on my apron! Cheers, Patrizio!

Thank you, Patricio, stuck housebound with all this rain today. Will
call you during the week (on my way to / from work).
trying to finish reading "Super sad...", though.M

Hi Misha!

That is fine. Call when convenient. As I mentioned, I'll leave it on patio if we won't be home.
Furthermore, I keep meaning to ask if you work with Bruce Schmidt? He is married to a friend from WInnipeg days. Cheers, Patrizio!

G'Day Patrick,

Sorry to hear about your bicycle seat - I wouldn't have thought a bicycle
seat would be high on the list of most sought after items.

I hope we can cross paths with Mike and Yien in Vancouver - the first half
of January would make it quite a possibility as at this stage I will be
coming in early January (around the 10th) - just have to sort out with Rae
and Lloyd when the best time to get to Sun peaks will be (in terms of school
holidays etc).

The weather here is most unseasonal; we have had almost 75mm of rain over
the last week and temperatures have been mainly in the low and mid teens.
It's been so cold and wet that our house decorating (read internal painting)
has been somewhat curtailed as it is taking too long for the paint to dry.
We are supposed to be having a new air conditioner fitted tomorrow but the
forecast is for more showers so that may get put off as well; next week we
are scheduled to have our solar system fitted (2.2KW) but that is also
looking unlikely!

Must go as there is a special program on tv about Steve Jobs about to start
- I am looking forward to watching it.

Ooroo for now Love to all Trevor

Hi TNT!

Given your probable date of arrival, I think you'll be able to connect with Yien and Mike and family. I gather that Tina will be heading to Vietnam. I s that correct? Either way, you are welcome to stay here when in town. Suppose rain is welcome, aside from making your house maintenance difficult. Is this the case?

On cycling front, my new seat seem to be working out well. Enjoyed a terrific ride last Thursday. Whirlygig and I rode out to UBC and then along Marice Drive all the way to Kent which runs parallel to Marine Drive. We met friend, Big Molly, at foot of CSTB and proceeded to Iona Regional Park. Lovely day but quite cloudy and overcast, although no rain. By the time I was home had logged 81.33K so was very pleased.

Just a relatively short ride on Friday, out to UBC for three hills and a total of 51.33K. Had a shift on Saturday so only rode downtown and then to Legacy, in the Olympic Village, afterward. Met Cora Lee there at about 4:30pm for a wine tasting. Argentinian winery, Circus, with three wines: Torrontes, Malbec and Cabbage. Not overly impressed with them but picked up first two, ($15/bottle so not a bad price), and a couple of bottles of malt, latter much to the extreme consternation of The Sisterhood!

That night we had been invited to Whirlygig's for dinner. Had a lovely meal and then played bridge afterwards. Kerry, his significant other, is just learning so we spent much of the time helping her with bidding, etc. Other friends, Gail and John, popped by later and we played with them for a few hands or so. Very pleasant evening with good friends and delicious food, made even better as they have a wonderful fireplace. So cosy, playing in same room, made even cosier by virtue of light rain falling and additional warmth of a few snorts of malt!

Only a short ride out to UBC, late Sunday afternoon, after my household/kitchen chores had been completed. Managed to squeeze in 31.33K and be home by 4:45pm with barely enough time for a quick shower before guests were to arrive!

Hi Patricio,
Sounds like you had a nice ride this morning....glad you are keepig my husband out of trouble
and preventing him from buying anymore motorcycles in his spare time lol
Although Al only just mentioned our Halloween party we have decided to take this year off
because so many of our friends are not able to come.  Have no fear you will first on the list
for our next shindig!  Say hi to Corinne!
Love Marilyn

Hi Patrice,

No Problemo, I know you're busy. I really enjoyed the ride the other day
and look forward to another outing before long. I was going to head out on a
river jaunt this morning and unfortunately the sky opened up, to be expected
this time of year I guess.

I hope you had a great thanksgiving, give our best to the family.

Hi Pat,

We're arriving in Vancouver on Dec 30, 2011 and leaving Vancouver for Kelowna for 2 weeks skiing at Big White on 13 Jan 2012. I'm sure we can arrange a catch up in that time!

Love Yien

Hi Famiglia Pether!

Great that we will all be able to get together. Don't think Tina will be along, however. Gather she wants to attend the graduation of her foster child in Vietnam.

On cycling front, my new seat, (Had original one stolen a week ago while attending a film at VIFF!), seems to be working out well. Enjoyed a terrific ride last Thursday. Whirlygig and I rode out to UBC and then along Marine Drive all the way to Kent which runs parallel to Marine Drive, between it and Fraser. We met friend, Big Molly, at foot of CSTB and proceeded to Iona Regional Park. Lovely day but quite cloudy and overcast, although no rain. By the time I was home had logged 81.33K so was very pleased. Weather today has kept me indoors, not to mention harsh task mistress, Coriandre!

Hi Sir Pat and Lady Corinne. Great to read your email and the successful birthday party for Annie. We have been in Cornwall again and will contact you later by phone. All well busy with work and singing. Pat's busy with her gigs and sends her love too.
Sir James and Lady Patrizia

Hi Lady Patrizia and Sir James!

Glad you enjoyed Mom's birthday snaps! We have made friends with a wonderful couple from Cornwall so perhaps you can visit us there when we do a house exchange in 2012! Pleased all goes well with work and Pat's gigs!!!
